science of biologging is somewhat older and is recognised to have started as early as the 1940s, when depth gauges were used on whales and seals (Scholander 1940). After Scholander, the earliest biologging devices used on marine animals are generally recognised to be the maximum-depth recorder (DeVries and Wohlschlag 1964) and time-depth recorders (Kooyman 1965), all of which were deployed on Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddellii (Evans et al. 2013).Technological advances are increasingly allowing for the miniaturisation of devices, as well as the incorporation of more sophisticated sensors into animal-borne instruments. For example, the use of fast-loc GPS technology (e.g. Dragon et al. 2012a), accelerometers (Naito et al. 2010 and camera systems (e.g. Naito et al. 2013) is allowing more detailed and fine-scale assessments of marine animal movements and behaviour. Furthermore, the addition of various sensors to biologging instruments is contributing increasingly to our understanding of ocean physical properties (Fedak 2013) and how marine mammals adjust their behaviour in relation to them (e.g. McIntyre et al. 2011a;Jaud et al. 2012;Bestley et al. 2013). Although the technological advances are clear, it is of interest to know how these technologies are applied in scientific studies and what specific questions are being addressed.Biologging devices are currently used in scientific studies of numerous taxa, including terrestrial mammals (e.g. Hetem et al. 2012;McFarland et al. 2013), reptiles (e.g. Dubois et al. 2009;Watanabe et al. 2013), birds (e.g. Dean et al. 2013;Phipps et al. 2013), fish (e.g. Bonfil et al. 2005Yasuda et al. 2013) and even invertebrates (e.g. Stewart et al. 2012;Watts et al. 2012). Given the obvious difficulties in observing animals at sea directly, the use of biologging technologies is ideally suited for studies involving marine animals, particularly semi-aquatic species that haul out on land, thereby providing opportunities for the deployment of instruments. Marine biologists (and marine mammalogists in particular) are increasingly making use of biologging technology. We present a generic and flexible framework for building geoscientific metadata portals independent of content standards for metadata and protocols. Data can be harvested with commonly used protocols (e.g., Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) and metadata standards like DIF or ISO 19115. The new Java-based portal software supports any XML encoding and makes metadata searchable through Apache Lucene. Software administrators are free to define searchable fields independent of their type using XPath. In addition, by extending the fulltext search engine (FTS) Apache Lucene, we have significantly improved queries for numerical and date/time ranges by supplying a new trie-based algorithm, thus enabling high-performance space/time retrievals in FTS-based geo portals. The harvested metadata are stored in separate indexes, which makes it possible to combine these into different portals. The portal-specific Java API and web service interface is highly flexible and supports custom front-ends for users, provides automatic query completion (AJAX), and dynamic visualization with conventional mapping tools. The software has been made freely available through the open source concept.

Access to information about past states of the environment and social systems is fundamental to understand, and cope with, the challenges of climate change and over-exploitation of natural resources at the onset of the 21st century. The loss of (old) data is a major threat to understanding better and mitigating long-term effects of human activities and anthropogenic changes to the environment. Although this is intuitively evident for old and local literature of any kind, even present-day international publishing of papers without the underlying raw data makes access to basic information a crucial issue. Here, we summarise experience resulting from a EU-funded International Science & Technology Cooperation (INCO) project (CENSOR) addressing Coastal Ecosystem Research and Management in the El Nin˜o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) context. We show that indeed ''Grey Literature'' is still one of the most important sources of knowledge about natural science research and management of natural resource systems in Latin American countries. We argue that public archiving of original data of present-day research and old (Grey) Literature and easy public access are important for appreciating today's global environmental challenges caused by human activities, both past and present. r
