Panels Made From Giant Reed Bonded With Non-Modified Starches

Abstract: Panels were made from Arundo donax L. particles bonded with different non-modified starches as adhesive without chemical additives by hotpressing at a low temperature (110 ºC) and pressure (2.6 N/mm 2 ). The experimental panels were tested for their physical and mechanical properties according to the procedures defined by the European Union (EN) Standard. The microstructure of samples was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Panels manufactured with potato starch had the highest modulus of rupture a… Show more

“…Having performed the analysis of variance (Table 3), it can be observed that the density depends on the particle size and the pressing cycle but does not depend on the pressing time, obtaining higher values with a smaller particle size and a second pressing cycle; particle size is the manufacturing variable that has the most impact. This result is in line with that obtained in other studies with binderless boards [32], which state that density depends on the particle shape and size; to reduce the density, it is necessary to take particle size and shape into account.…”

“…In this regard, studies have been carried out on particleboards in which synthetic resins are replaced with natural resins and adhesives, such as protein, lignin, tannin, gluten, starch, citric acid, etc. [27][28][29][30][31][32][33].…”

“…Garcia-Ortuño et al [8] fabricaron tableros de partículas de caña consiguiendo tableros estructurales comparables a los paneles de madera. Ferrández-García et al [9] fabricaron paneles ecológicos de partículas de caña usando fécula de patata como aglutinante. Asimismo, se ha propuesto el uso de partículas de caña para la fabricación de cajas para frutas y verduras [10,11].…”
