Pancreatic Pseudocyst Located in the Liver

Abstract: Pancreatic pseudocyst in the liver is a rare complication of acute or chronic pancreatitis. However, its frequency seems to be increasing with modem imaging procedures. The authors report a case of pancreatic pseudocyst involving the left lobe of the liver that occurred in a patient who never showed clinical evidence of pancreatitis or pancreatic injury. Complete screening led to the discovery of alcoholic chronic pancreatitis. The pseudocyst was treated successfully by radiologic drainage. The pancreatic pseu… Show more

“…These are primarily single case reports and mini case series but included two relatively thorough review articles which reviewed 26 cases[6] and 23 cases[7]. Two of the cases were notable in that the IHPP formation was thought to be secondary to ectopic pancreatic tissue and not an inflammatory pancreatic process[8,9].…”

“…Although IHPP lesions may be clinically suspected in a patient based on the presentation and radiological imaging, definitive diagnosis was rarely made until analysis of the cystic fluid was performed demonstrating a high amylase content[6,7,17,20,21]. …”

“…Pancreatic pseudocysts can present various complications, some more common such as infection, rupture, and gastrointestinal obstruction, to the slightly rarer. Hepatic pseudocysts are a recognized but rare phenomenon described within published case reports 7 8 9 10 11 12 . In one report of a patient presenting with a large liver cystic lesion in association with a pancreatic tail pseudocyst, the authors proposed several potential mechanisms for development of hepatic pseudocysts, including through direct invasion or possibly presence of heterotopic pancreatic tissue within the liver.…”

“…Nealon and Walser [52]have proposed a simple ERCP classification of pancreatic ductal anatomy in pancreatic pseudocysts (table 2). The following are key features that we believe must be known for optimum clinical management [53, 54, 55]. (1) The underlying cause of pancreatitis and whether there has been a history of acute pancreatitis or whether there is underlying chronic pancreatitis.…”
