Pancreatic Enzyme Synthesis and Secretion Are Independently Regulated by Insulin and Glucocorticosteroids

Abstract: Both insulin and glucocorticosteroid (GS) deficiency causes a reduction of amylase synthesis and changes in the dose-response curve of cholecystokinin (CCK) stimulated enzyme secretion in rats. Since we found a reduction of plasma insulin in adrenalectomized rats, we now tested the hypothesis that the regulation of amylase synthesis by insulin may be mediated by GS. Three groups of male rats were investigated: controls, streptozotocin induced diabetics, and diabetics treated with GS. Animals were sacrificed 10… Show more

“…3). It has been reported that pancreatic amylase is regulated by several factors, such as insulin, [10][11][12][13][14][15] glucocorticoid, 26,27) and cholecystokinin (CCK). 25) Reduction of amylase by a low carbohydrate diet or a high protein diet has been explained by lowered insulin secretion with a reduction in dietary carbohydrate ingestion.…”

“…Some hormones regulate amylase gene expression, [10][11][12][13][14][15][25][26][27] and our previous study showed that hyperCCKemia suppressed pancreatic amylase. 25) But other studies have shown that the adaptation of pancreatic enzymes to a high AA diet did not depend on CCK, 21,22) and in the case of this study, CCK was perhaps not involved in the suppression of amylase by BCAA.…”

“…Amylase production (Korc et al., 1981 ; Mossner et al., 1990 ) and secretion (Patel et al., 2004 ) appear to be regulated by insulin; however, the effect of insulin resistance on amylase production is not known. In the neonatal pig model, serum amylase levels showed an inverse association with serum insulin levels from birth to 3 months of age (Pierzynowska et al., 2018 ).…”
