PANACEA: An Internet of Bio-NanoThings Application for Early Detection and Mitigation of Infectious Diseases

Abstract: The Internet of Bio-NanoThings (IoBNT) concept envisions the connection between biological cells and the Internet. The ultimate goal of IoBNT is to catalyze a revolution in biomedical technologies through advances in molecular communication, integrated systems, bio-nanosensors and synthetic biology to improve human health and quality of life. In this paper, an application of IoBNT called PANACEA (a solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases in Latin) is presented as a solution for an end-to-end design… Show more

“…Meanwhile, continuous long-term monitoring of these vital signs may be used for management of chronic diseases as well as data collection to predict future attacks. Recently, researchers also considered applying IoBNT concept for detection and mitigation of infectious diseases [15] where bio-hybrid BNTs constantly monitors for biomarkers released by infectious microorganisms. Other biomarkers that would be interesting to monitor by IoBNT would be glucose.…”

“…Since the capabilities of individual bio-nanomachines may be limited to simple sensing and actuation, the internet of bio-nano things (IoBNT) [3] is envisioned to enable the interconnection of several bio-nanomachines to perform complex tasks. Applications of IoBNT include intra-body sensing and actuation, connectivity control, control of toxic gases and pollution in the environment [3], and diagnosis and mitigation of infectious diseases [4].…”
