Palynology of the Middle Part (30-78 Metres) of the 120 M Deep Section in Northern Greece (Macedonia)

Abstract: In this paper the results of a palynological investigation of the 30-78 m interval from a deep bore hole in the Tenagi Philippon are presented. The pollen diagram reflects alternating steppe phases and phases of oak forest, some of them with an evergreen character. Taking the 14C dated last interglacial-glacial cycle (resp. forest and steppe) as a model, the oak phases are interpreted as interglacials or warm interstadials and the steppe phases mostly as glacials. The presence of pollen from evergreen oaks indi… Show more

“…The older age was calibrated using the calibration curve proposed by Hughen et al (2005). Table 2 Proposed local geologic-climatic units for Urmia sequence correlated with two long terrestrial sequences of Greece (Wijmstra, 1969;Wijmstra and Smit, 1976;Wijmstra, 1987a,1987b;Tzedakis, 1993Tzedakis, , 1994Tzedakis, , 1999. …”

“…A number of these records have been studied in Southern Europe over the last few decades (Wijmstra, 1969;Wijmstra and Smit, 1976;Woillard, 1978;de Beaulieu and Reille, 1984, van der Wiel and Wijmstra, 1987a,1987bFollieri et al, 1988;Tzedakis, 1993Tzedakis, , 1994Tzedakis, , 1999. These records have been correlated successfully to marine isotope stages and orbital parameters (Tzedakis et al, 1997;Magri and Tzedakis, 2000;de Beaulieu et al, 2001;Tzedakis, 2005).…”

“…As mentioned earlier, although the Bueu period presents a striking prominent expansion of deciduous trees as large as the Pontevedra period, the virtual absence of most of the Mediterranean taxa during the maximum expansion of deciduous oak and the large development of Fagus and Carpinus indicate that the Bueu climatic amelioration is weaker than that of the Pontevedra. Such relative difference of forest extent and climatic amelioration between the three forested periods are commonly recognized in the long Southern European pollen sequences Tenaghi Philippon (Tzedakis et al, 2003;Wijmstra and Smit, 1976) and Praclaux (Reille and de Beaulieu, 1995;Reille et al, 2000) and the SW Iberian margin pollen record MD01-2443 (Tzedakis et al, 2004b;Roucoux et al, 2006). In a review of the long Southern European pollen records, Tzedakis (2005) pointed out a broad correspondence between ice volume and Southern European forest changes over the previous glacial cycles.…”

“…1). Arboreal pollen (AP) records are excluded of Pinus, Juniperus, and Betula ; the record from Tenaghi Philippon is based on pollen data from Wijmstra (1969) and Wijmstra and Smit (1976) and the age model from Tzedakis et al (2006) (see also Sadori et al, 2016). Red bars and black dots at the bottom age axis indicate tephrochronological tie points and tuning points used for the age model of the DEEP site sequence .…”
