Palynology of the First 30 Metres of a 120 M Deep Section in Northern Greece

Abstract: In this paper the results of a palynological investigation of a 120 m deep borehole in the Tenaghi Philippon, Macedonia (Greece) are given. These data show that during the Holocene mainly an oakwood forest was present. In the most recent part of the Holocene Fagus and Abies were also present. During the climatic extremes of the Weichselian an open vegetation existed. During the early interstadials a forest with Quercus, Fagus and Carpinus existed, whereas in the later interstadials stands of Pinus predominated… Show more

“…No pollen data exist for the early part of the Li'^Ĉ jlacial and there is no conclusive evidence to indicate that short relatively warm interstadials "' the type recorded in I-'rance by Woillard (1978) and in Cireece by Wymstra (1969) occurred in Tasmanu' even though there is a record of rainforest development for the Huon Valley from 53 400 to 41 150 yr B.p. However, these dates are probabb minimal and tbis record could possibly be interglacial (Colboun & (ioede, 1979).…”

“…Unfortunately, the Portuguese pollen record does not extend beyond MIS 11. The only southern European record that continuously spans the last 800 kyr (and indeed the last 1.35 million years) is from Tenaghi Philippon, NE Greece (Wijmstra, 1969;Wijmstra and Smit, 1976;van der Wiel andWijmstra, 1987a, 1987b). While its astronomicallycalibrated timescale is not as well constrained as that of the Portuguese margin, comparison of the temperate tree pollen record with atmospheric methane www.clim-past.net/6/131/2010/concentrations has also revealed a strong coherence over the last 800 kyr (Tzedakis et al, 2009).…”

“…It has been suggested that the southeast Alps and the adjacent Dinaric Mountains were the closest main refugial area whence spruce slowly migrated south and southeast (Lang, 1994). However, Picea pollen is absent from diagrams of the Late-glacial from north and northwest Greece (Wijmstra, 1969 ;Bottema, 1974 ;Tzedakis, 1994).…”
