Palynology and paleoenvironments of the Bajo Comisión section, Cretaceous of Santa Cruz province, Argentina

Show more

“…They were recovered in the early Cretaceous sediments of the Baqueró Group in Patagonia. The genera Mesosingeria Archangelsky, Mesodescolea Archangelsky and Sueria Menéndez, are considered to be endemic to Patagonia (Archangelsky, 2003). Mesodescolea plicata Archangelsky was found to be related to the extant Stangeria Moore (Artabe and Archangelsky, 1971) while Mesosingeria parva Villar de Seoane may be related to Encephalartos Lehmann (Villar de Seoane, 1997) and Sueria rectinervis Menéndez to Zamia and Ceratozamia Brongniart (Artabe, 1994).…”

“…Archangelsky (1967a, p.103e105) identified two contiguous plant bearing mudstone levels in the lower part of the Cerro Bayo section: NF1 or 'Araucarites' and NF2 which has a similar floral composition (Archangelsky, 1967a p.105). These fossiliferous levels were later mentioned in Archangelsky (2001Archangelsky ( , 2003 as SP10 ( Area Bajo Grande). In the schematic stratigraphic section of the Baquer o Group as outlined by Limarino et al (2012), both fossiliferous levels are placed between the middleeupper sections of depositional sequence 1 (figure 2 and table 2 in Limarino et al, 2012).…”

“…The unit crops out in the Macizo del Deseado area (Santa Cruz Province) where the localities Punta del Barco, Estancia Bajo Tigre, Anfiteatro de Tic o and Campamento Piedra Grande (Fig. 1A) have been intensely explored and studied (Cladera et al, 2002;Archangelsky, 2003;Limarino et al, 2012). Three formations in ascending stratigraphic order, Anfiteatro de Tic o, Bajo Tigre and Punta del Barco, were recognized in these sites (Cladera et al, 2002).…”
