The pollen morphology of 12 Brazilian native species of Malpighiaceae from forest fragments was investigated in search to expand the morphological knowledge of the species analyzed thus contributing to its palynology, taxonomy, and conservation. The pollen grains were acetolysed, measured, photographed using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and described qualitatively. The quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and multivariate statistics. The pollen grains are monads, apolar or isopolar, small to large, with circular to quadrangular amb, oblate-spheroidal to prolatespheroidal, tricolporate with long colpi and lalongate endoaperture or 6-(7-8)-porate with or without colpoids and aspides, psilate-rugulate, rugulate or microreticulate exine, sexine thicker than nexine in most species. The results of this study point to differences in the morphology of the pollen grains in the analyzed species, which indicates Malpighiaceae as a eurypalynous family; this fact was also confirmed by quantitative data and the multivariate analysis. These data reinforce the importance of pollen morphology for identification and distinction of genus and species of the family.

Anatomia foliar como subsídio à taxonomia do gênero Camarea St.-Hil (Malpighiaceae). Camarea é endêmica no Brasil e faz parte da tribo Gaudichaudieae que apresentam características morfológicas, como suas flores cleistógamas e a redução de estruturas em flores casmógamas, no entanto os caracteres morfológicos existentes ainda não são suficientes para a resolução de problemas relacionados ao gênero. Com isso, objetivou-se a descrição da morfoanatomia de seis espécies de Camarea em busca de caracteres que possam auxiliar na delimitação das espécies. As espécies foram obtidas em herbários, cortadas à mão livre, coradas e comparadas entre si. Neste artigo, é possível observar caracteres úteis para distinguir espécies como: morfologia das glândulas foliares, contorno do pecíolo e da nervura principal, estratificação da epiderme e tipo de mesofilo. Os resultados obtidos auxiliaram na distinção das espécies analisadas e trouxeram novos dados para o clado, tais características poderão auxiliar em futuros estudos taxonômicos e filogenéticos do grupo, deixando claro a importância da anatomia como ferramenta para a taxonomia.

Lippia alba (Mill.) N.E. Br. ex Britton & P. Wilson (Verbenaceae) is a herbal aromatic shrub with medicinal properties. Natural populations of this species are allogamous and self-incompatible. Therefore, this plant species relies on pollinators to outcross and maintain the genetic variability. Here, we investigated the floral phenology, pollen morphology, the floral visitor entomofauna, and the influence of climatic factors on the frequency of visits in L. alba flowers. The study was conducted at Federal University of Juiz de Fora Plant Experimental Area, southeast Brazil. The flowering of L. alba occurred throughout the whole year. The anthesis is diurnal and lasts 5 d. The nectar guide was visible from the onset of flowering until the third day. Pollen grains were classified as isopolar, oblate spheroidal, three-colporate (rare, four-colporate), surface tectate-perforate, and endoaperture lalongate, with median constriction. Insects from the order Hymenoptera were the most frequent visitors observed, followed by Lepidoptera, Thysanoptera, Diptera, and Hemiptera-Heteroptera. The preference of insects for flowers with nectar guides shows that the color is likely to be an important visual trait to increase the frequency of visits. Moreover, the climate variables temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and light were important to define the composition of the most frequent floral visitors.
