paleogene deposits are extensively exposed in the eastern Dahomey (Benin) sedimentary Basin in southwestern nigeria. outcrop logging and sampling of lithological sections were systematically carried out at the ibese Quarry, in order to re-establish the age of sediments and reconstruct their depositional environment using samples rich in organic-walled microfossils. two formations were recognized; the Ewekoro and Akinbo Formations. Two main lithological units were identified; limestones and carbonaceous shales. Minor lithologies include ferrugineous sandstones and glauconite. Results from the palynological examination show that terrestrial palynomorphs (spores and pollen) dominate over the marine dinoflagellates cyst species in the samples recovered from the Ewekoro Formation, while samples from the Akinbo formation recorded high abundance with less diversity of the marine dinoflagellates cysts over the terrestrial sporomorph. Age determination/correlation was achieved based on selected stratigraphic index taxa recovered. the samples from ewekoro formation were dated as late early paleocene to early Middle paleocene, based on the presence of the following pollen keytaxa: Proxapertites operculatus, Retidiporites magdalenensis, Spinizonocolpites baculatus, Mauritidiites crassiexinus, Scabratriporites simpliformis, and Echitriporites trianguliformis. the samples from the Akinbo formation were assigned late Middle paleocene to late paleocene, based on the presence of the following pollen key-taxa: Proxapertites operculatus/cursus, Grimsdalea polygonalis, Retibrevitricolpites triangulatus, Psilatricolporites operculatus, Retistephanocolpites williamsi, Bombacidites sp., Apectodinium homomorphum, and Apectodinium quinquelatum. The environmentally significant palynomorph species indicated differences in paleodepositional environments, ranging from shallow marine in the ewekoro formation at the base, up the stratigraphic sequence, to marginal marine (estuarine) depositional environment in the overlying Akinbo formation. The Dahomey Basin is one of the numerous marginal basins formed along the coast of Africa and Brazil following the opening of the South Atlantic. It is an extensive coastal basin located on the margin of the Gulf of Guinea (Fig. 1). The basin is regarded as one of the active basins among the Nigerian sedimentary basins since its subaerial parts are eroding while deposition is taking place in its distal submarine parts. The Dahomey Basin is a combination of the inland/coastal/offshore basin 1 , that stretches from southeastern Ghana through Togo and Republic of Benin to the southwestern part of Nigeria. It was described by 1 as miogeosyncline, a basin in which volcanism has not been associated with sedimentation. The palynological study of the outcrop Formations in parts of Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Southeastern Niger Delta Basin, Nigeria has contributed to unraveling the palynostratigraphy and paleoenvironments of the outcrops through the use of diagnostic palynomorphs. The section is made up of carbonaceous shales, sandstones, mudstones and claystones. The conventional maceration technique for recovering acid-insoluble organic-walled microfossils from sediments was used to prepare twenty outcrop samples for palynological studies. The samples produced poor to fair diversity assemblages of palynomorphs. A total of 176 palynomorphs species were recorded, with 48% pollen grains, 33% spores, 12% dinoflagellate cysts, 5% fungal spores, and 2% microforam test wall linings. Based on stratigraphically selected index taxa recovered,age determination and correlation wereestablished. The samples from Imo Formation were assigned Late Paleocene-Eocene based on Psilatricolporites Crassus, Retitricolporites irregularies, Psilatricolporites sp. and Leiotriletes adriennis with the presence of Paleocene dinoflagellate cysts such as Lejeunacysta beninensis and Selenopemphix nephroides. Ameki samples were dated Early-Middle Eocene based on Proxapertites operculatus, Retistephanocolpites williamsi, Mauritidites crassiexinius, Monocolpites marginatus and Longapertites marginatus. Ogwashi-Asaba shale samples were assigned Late Eocene-Early Oligocene due to the abundant presence of Verrucatosporites usmensis, Laevigatosporites discordatus and Retitricolporites irregularis while Eze-Aku samples were tentatively assigned Paleocene because of the presence of two pollen index fossils Proxapertites operculatus and Pachydermites diederixi. Inferred depositional conditions suggest that Imo Formation was deposited in a shallow marine or near shore brackish water estuarine environment. The Ameki Formation was accumulated in a marginal marine or near shore, brackish water-estuarine environment in the upper deltaic setting. The Ogwashi-Asaba Formation was deposited in a progradational shoreline moving between the brackish water and fresh water deltaic plain. The Eze-Aku Formation was deposited in an upper foreshore fresh water environment. The palynological study of the samples are Paleogene Formations while the paleoenvironment is in a costal deltaic to shallow-marine environment and are appropriate for hydrocarbon accumulations and exploration.

This review attempted a detailed description of geological and hydrogeological configurations of Cross River and Imo-Akwa Ibo basins. It presented a synthesis of hydrochemistry and a description of the hydrogeological configurations of the two basins. Hydrogeologically, most areas under Cross River and Imo-Kwa-Ibo are poor in terms of groundwater potentials. Based on the hydrochemistry, the basins hold water of excellent quality. Groundwater sources fall in soft to moderately hard classes. The entire sources groundwater has a TDS concentration of less than 500 mg/l. Groundwater classification based on electrical conductivity (EC) showed EC levels were less than 500 µS/cm. Most of the examined cations and anions are within WHO reference guidelines for drinking water quality. However, no broad analysis of water quality based on water quality indices. Also, studies modeling pollution or the impact of land use changes on groundwater quality are wanting. Thus, further analysis of the hydrochemistry of groundwater aquifers is recommended.
