Palm-Oil-Based Biodiesel in Indonesia: A Case Study on a Socioscientific Issue That Engages Students to Learn Chemistry and Its Impact on Society

Abstract: This paper presents a case study examining the current controversial issue of palm oil production for manufacturing biodiesel in Indonesia. The study looks at how this issue was used as a context to teach chemistry at the undergraduate level. The lesson unit promotes general educational skills, which students need to develop in order to become actively involved in societal discussions as scientifically literate and responsible citizens. The study presents students' views on socioscientific issues-based chemist… Show more

“…This can make the theme of a STEAM activity more interesting and applicable for the students. 16 An example is using a local economic agriculture plant as a raw material 38 and employing eggshells as a green catalyst in producing biodiesel. 24 By doing so, the implication is that the STEAM activity will offer an engaging opportunity for students not only for their perception of science (biodiesel production) and the students' BSPS but also for their economic, societal, and environmental points of view.…”

“…There are numerous socioscientific issues in which chemistry plays an important role. These include fuels such as biodiesel, 10 mixtures of alcoholic beverages, 11 or pollution resulting from the degradation of plastics in ecosystems. 5 It is regarded as critical that students are enabled to construct and analyze arguments and make decisions, related to the social applications and implications of chemistry.…”

“…It is worth noting that we can find in the literature other educational activities other than role-playing that allow students to discuss and make decisions about chemistry in society such as jigsaws, learning stations, short interactive lectures, etc.…”
