Palm Kernel Oil Polyol-based Polyurethane as Shape Memory Material: Effect of Polyol Molar Ratio

Abstract: Shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) has found application in a variety of field such as textile, sensors, structural and food industry due to its unique and composition dependent properties. However, most SMPU are synthesised using petroleum-based raw materials. This has triggered the effort in finding an alternative source of raw materials due to the environmental awareness. For this purpose, SMPU was synthesised based on palm kernel oil polyol (PKO-p) up to 40% molar ratio in replace of petroleum-based polyol, … Show more

“…The increase in hydrogen bonding due to urethane linkage in the hard segment domains results in their aggregation into crystalline or semicrystalline regions and consequently increases the microphase separation in TPUs . Degree of phase separation (DPS) was further calculated from obtained values of HBI using the following equation (eq ), and the values have been provided in Table D P S = normalH normalB normalI 1 + H B I …”

“…FTIR was used to characterize and determine the presence of Ast in order to determine the successful combination PU and Ast ( Figure 3A). In the PU spectrum, characteristic peaks detected at 1167, 1525, and 1727 cm −1 corresponded to stretching vibrations of C-O-C (urethane formation), C=C, and C=O (carbonyl urethane group) bonds, respectively [26]. The broad region from 2809 to 3000 cm −1 consisted of two peaks at 2872 and 2959 cm −1 , deriving from the CH2 symmetric stretching and anti-symmetric stretching bands.…”

“…Synthesis of polyurethane from diol and diisocyanate [1] In the production of biobased polyols, natural oils (vegetable or animal) are preferred, which are the most abundant and cheapest of renewable organic resources [2]. Vegetable oils, in particular, are potential alternatives due to their abundance, relatively low cost, and renewable nature [3]. It has also been used in oils obtained from the seeds of plants such as soybean oil, canola oil, and sunflower oil as renewable resources [4].…”
