Palladium‐Catalyzed Decarboxylative Heck‐Type Coupling of Activated Aliphatic Carboxylic Acids Enabled by Visible Light

Abstract: The palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction of N-hydroxyphthalimide esters and styrenes to deliver exclusively (E)-substituted olefins under irradiation with visible light is reported. This method tolerates N-hydroxyphthalimide esters derived from primary, secondary, tertiary as well as benzylic carboxylic acids. Notably, Pd(PPh ) is employed as an inexpensive palladium source and no addition of base or classical photocatalyst is required. Mechanistic studies suggest a light-mediated single-electron reduction of… Show more

“…An important method in organic synthesis is the reaction of aryl and vinyl halides with olefins catalyzed by palladium such the Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reaction [1][2][3] giving two types of products, namely E and Z. Generally, this reaction is carried out with high (E)-selectivity (Scheme 1) [4].…”

“…Außer Alkylhalogeniden konnten auch redoxaktive Ester als Substrate in der photoinduzierten Pd-Katalyse verwendet werden. “…This strategy was also successfully translated to the fragmentation of C(sp 2 ) À I bonds of vinyl iodides, leading to the formation of vinyl hybrid Pd-radical intermediates. [6] Notably, these novel methods [7] rely on the employment of organic halides, [8] predominantly iodides and bromides, which limits the synthetic applicability of this approach. Potential employment of alternative aryl electrophiles would substantially expand the variety of available substrates for these transformations.…”
