“…However, this wide range resulting from the heterogeneous environmental settings in the area ( Figure 3 ) is not just specific for Basel but can be found in surrounding regions 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 , 70 , 71 and other areas across Europe. 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 , 76 , 77

“…For example, the mixed signal measured in the bulk samples of human teeth from Basel-Waisenhaus does not only fit into the range of bioavailable Sr at Basel and in the direct surroundings but also matches 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values measured and modeled over wide areas in Europe. 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 , 76 , 77 Hence, it cannot be excluded that mobile individuals originating from areas with similar isotope values would not be visible. In this context, O isotope and aDNA data help reduce the number of possible places of origin: particularly the URA and other regions of eastern France and Central Europe are among the most plausible possibilities.…”

“…If we return to the consideration of the mobility of the Jamestown donkey specimen, its genetic ancestry provides important information hinting towards West Africa and the wider trade network associated with this region, all the way to the Iberian Peninsula. Strontium isotope ratios vary greatly in West Africa (0.709 to 0.730 [23]) and the Iberian Peninsula (0.7046 to 0.735 [33,34]), though less so in the Caribbean (0.706 to 0.711 [35]), but unfortunately no bioavailable 87 Sr/ 86 Sr data are yet available for North Africa. The donkey’s 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios of 0.7100 exceed the range of published Sr values from the Canaries, which tend to lower values from the islands’ young volcanic geology [36,37].…”

“…As is always the case in Bell Beaker studies, the question of the movement of goods leads to a discussion regarding the scale and nature of human mobility. Strontium isotope analyses indicate a variety of scenarios (e.g., Waterman et al 2014;Díaz-del-Río et al 2022), often with a low level of mobility but sometimes with indications of movement over longer distance and involving more individuals, as is the case at the early 2nd millennium calBC site of Valdescusa (Ortega et al 2021). It is noteworthy that this diversity is echoed by work undertaken on contemporaneous non-Bell Beaker sites (Díaz-Zorita Bonilla et al 2018).…”
