S U M M A R YNew palaeomagnetic data from the central and western sectors of the Trans-Mexican volcanic belt (TMVB) are presented and analysed for palaeosecular variation (PSV) and tectonic rotations. Fifty-one sites with geochronological control were collected from selected volcanic lava flows, which cover the temporal and spatial activity in the magmatic arc for the past ∼11 Ma. Rock magnetic experiments reveal that generally Ti-poor titanomagnetites, sometimes maghemitized, are the magnetic carriers of the characteristic remanent magnetizations. After analysis of detailed progressive demagnetization data, 47 mean-site directions are determined. In addition, data from previous regional palaeomagnetic study in the eastern TMVB sector (53 sites) are re-analysed. Palaeomagnetic data are grouped according to geographic distribution (three structural sectors) and according to age (late Miocene, Pliocene or Quaternary). To avoid discarding tectonic effects, the less stringent criterion (i.e. a fixed cut-off angle to the mean equal to 45 • ) was applied to identify transitional data, affecting four sites. Palaeomagnetic results, backed by positive reversal tests, indicate no palaeomagnetically detectable vertical-axis block rotations in the study areas. The nearly geocentric axial dipole (GAD) inclinations suggest no significant tilting effects and negligible quadrupolar contributions. Since the mean palaeomagnetic directions for the study areas do not differ from reference directions from the North American polar wander path, two data sets for 11-5 and 5-0 Ma are tested for geomagnetic purposes. Virtual geomagnetic poles (VGPs) were selected using both fixed −45 • -and optimum, variable cut-off angles. This resulted in VGP dispersions that increase back on time and are consistent with those obtained from globally distributed observations at the site latitude for their respective age ranges and cut-off criteria. Palaeomagnetic data from late Miocene and Pliocene TMVB rocks can be considered in the databases for time averaged field (TAF) and palaeosecular variation from lavas (PSVL) analyses and geomagnetic field geometry characterization during the past ∼11 Ma.

Our understanding of Earth’s paleogeography relies heavily on paleomagnetic apparent polar wander paths (APWPs), which represent the time-dependent position of Earth’s spin axis relative to a given block of lithosphere. However, conventional approaches to APWP construction have significant limitations. First, the paleomagnetic record contains substantial noise that is not integrated into APWPs. Second, parametric assumptions are adopted to represent spatial and temporal uncertainties even where the underlying data do not conform to the assumed distributions. The consequences of these limitations remain largely unknown. Here, we overcome these challenges with a bottom-up Monte Carlo uncertainty propagation scheme that operates on site-level paleomagnetic data. To demonstrate our methodology, we present an extensive compilation of site-level Cenozoic paleomagnetic data from North America, which we use to generate a high-resolution APWP. Our results demonstrate that even in the presence of substantial noise, polar wandering can be assessed with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution.

Globally distributed paleomagnetic data from discrete volcanic sites have previously been used for statistical studies of paleosecular variation and the structure of the time‐averaged field. We present a new data compilation, PSV10, selected from high‐quality paleodirections recorded over the past 10 Ma and comprising 2,401 sites from 81 studies. We require the use of modern laboratory and processing methods, a minimum of four samples per site, and within‐site Fisher precision parameter, kw, ≥50. Studies that identify significant tectonic effects or explicitly target transitional field states are excluded, thereby reducing oversampling of transitional time intervals. Additionally, we apply two approaches using geological evidence to minimize effects of short‐term serial correlation. PSV10 is suitable for use in new global geomagnetic and paleomagnetic studies as it has greatly improved spatial coverage of sites, especially at equatorial and high latitudes. VGP dispersion is latitudinally dependent, with substantially higher values in the Southern Hemisphere than at corresponding northern latitudes when no VGP cutoff is imposed. Average inclination anomalies for 10° latitude bins range from about +3 ± 2° to −7.5 ± 2° for the entire data set, with the largest negative values occurring at equatorial and mid‐northern latitudes. New 0–5 Ma TAF models (LN3 and LN3‐SC) based on selections of normal polarity data from PSV10 indicate a g20 term that is 3.0% of g10. Non‐zonal variations in field structure are observed near the magnetic equator and in regions of increased radial flux at high latitudes over the Americas, the Indian Ocean, and Asia.
