Paleomagnetic and Rock Magnetic Properties of Sediment Samples from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 183, Kerguelen Plateau, Holes 1138A and 1140A

Abstract: The magnetic record of sediments of Sites 1138 and 1140 established by shipboard measurements is extended and corrected. About 600 sediment cubes were stepwise demagnetized with alternating fields to determine their characteristic remanence. For some samples from Site 1138, standard shipboard demagnetization at 20 mT turned out to be insufficient to obtain the characteristic remanence. Selected samples were examined by laboratory-induced magnetization analysis, hysteresis measurements, and thermomagnetic measu… Show more

“…The other four sites we selected, ODP Sites 690 (Maud Rise), 761 (Exmouth Plateau), 1138 (Kerguelen Plateau), and the Agost shelf section have magnetostratigraphic age control (Groot et al 1989; Spieß 1990; Galbrun 1992; Antretter et al 2003). We constructed less precise age models for these four sites with the assumption of constant sedimentation rates between magnetic reversals (Supplementary Appendix).…”

“…The average sample spacing at Hole 1138A corresponds to 1 Ma. Age assignments for Site 1138 are based on our interpretation of combined biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic data [ Coffin et al , 2000; Vigour and Lazarus , 2002; Antretter et al , 2003; Bohaty et al , 2003]. Details on Leg 183 are given by Coffin et al [2000] and Frey et al [2003].…”
