Paleography

Abstract: This entry describes the history of the discipline of paleography, which is the study of ancient handwriting in order to transcribe and read from manuscripts, to date and locate those manuscripts based on their handwriting, and to trace the history of handwriting styles and practices. It discusses how dating, locating, and identification of manuscripts has been carried out over time, and considers pitfalls and controversies in these practices.
