ABSTRACT. This paper presents low-temperature thermochronological data and K-Ar fault gouge ages from the Sierra de San Luis in the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas in order to constrain its low-temperature thermal evolution and exhumation history. Thermal modelling based on (U-Th)/He dating of apatite and zircon and apatite fission track dating point to the Middle Permian and the Triassic/Early Jurassic as main cooling/exhumation phases, equivalent to ca. 40-50% of the total exhumation recorded by the applied methods. Cooling rates are generally low to moderate, varying between 2-10 °C/Ma during the Permian and Triassic periods and 0.5-1.5 °C/Ma in post-Triassic times. Slow cooling and, thus, persistent residence of samples in partial retention/partial annealing temperature conditions strongly influenced obtained ages. Thermochronological data indicate no significant exhumation after Cretaceous times, suggesting that sampled rocks were already at or near surface by the Cretaceous or even before. As consequence, Cenozoic cooling rates are low, generally between 0.2-0.5 °C/Ma which is, depending on geothermal gradient used for calculation, equivalent to a total Cenozoic exhumation of 0.6-1.8 km. K-Ar fault gouge data reveal long-term brittle fault activity. Fault gouge ages constrain the end of ductile and onset of brittle deformation in the Sierra de San Luis to the Late Carboniferous/Early Permian. Youngest K-Ar illite ages of 222-172 Ma are interpreted to represent the last illite formation event, although fault activity is recorded up to the Holocene. RESUMEN. Historia de la exhumación y evolución del paisaje de la sierra de San Luis (Sierras Pampeanas, Argentina)-nuevas perspectivas a partir de datos termocronológicos de baja temperatura. Esta contribución presenta datos de termocronología de baja temperatura y edades de illitas generadas en zonas de fallas de la sierra de San Luis, en las Sierras Pampeanas Orientales de Argentina, con el propósito de aportar al conocimiento de la historia de su exhumación y evolución termal de baja temperatura. El modelado termal basado en dataciones de (U-Th)/He, apatita, circón y trazas de fisión sugiere que las principales fases de exhumación y enfriamiento ocurrieron durante el Pérmico medio y Triásico/Jurásico inferior, contribuyendo con aproximadamente 40-50% de la exhumación total registrada por los métodos utilizados. Las tasas de enfriamiento son, en general, bajas a moderadas, variando entre 2-10 °C/Ma durante el Pérmico y Triásico y 0,5-1,5 °C/Ma después del este último período. El lento enfriamiento y la persistente residencia de las muestras analizadas en condiciones térmicas de retención parcial (partial annealing) ha influenciado notoriamente las edades obtenidas. The Palaeozoic basement outcropping to the north of Los Vilos is formed by (i) the Choapa Metamorphic Complex (ChMC) made of metabasites (amphibolites and retrogressed eclogites), fine-grained gneisses, schists and quartz-schists, and (ii) the meta-sedimentary and sedimentary rocks of the Arrayán and Huentelauquén formations respectively. Near Huentelauquén (31º 30' S), the ChMC has been affected by three deformation episodes related with the Gondwanan orogenic episode. The first episode (D1) is represented by a foliation (S1) formed under HP-LT metamorphic conditions and preserved in syn-D2 garnet and albite porphyroblasts. A generalised crenulation cleavage (S2) was developed under pressure decreasing conditions during the second deformation episode (D2). This episode is responsible for the exhumation of the ChMC, which took place through an east-directed reverse fault system that thrusts the ChMC over the Arrayán Formation, producing more than 20 km shortening. The third deformation episode (D3) is represented by a west-verging kilometre-scale anticline, with a thrust in its reverse limb (Las Caldas thrust). Minor folds and crenulations are also associated with D3. D3 structures affect the ChMC and the Arrayán Formation and are responsible for the overturning of the D2 thrusts. The Huentelauquén Formation, late Carboniferous -Permian in age, is the latest unit deformed by Gondwanan structures. The characterisation of the structure and its relation to metamorphism in the study area, lead to propose a geodynamic model related with an Andean type non-collisional orogenic process, for the Gondwanan orogenic episode of the Andes at this latitude.Keywords: Gondwanan structure, tectono-metamorphic evolution, Choapa Metamorphic Complex, Chile, system thrust Resumen El basamento Paleozoico que aflora al norte de Los Vilos está constituido por (i) el Complejo Metamórfico de Choapa (CMCh), formado por esquistos, cuarzo esquistos, gneises de grano fino y metabasitas (anfibolitas y retroeclogitas) y (ii) rocas metasedimentarias y sedimentarias de las formaciones Arrayán y Huentelauquén respectivamente. Style of rifting and the stages of Pangea breakup

Pangea results from the progressive amalgamation of continental blocks achieved at 320 Ma.Assuming that the ancient concept of "active" versus "passive" rifting remains pertinent as end-members of more complex processes, we show that the progressive Pangea breakup occurred through a succession of rifting episodes characterized by different tectonic evolutions. A first episode of passive continental rifting during the Upper Carboniferous and Permian led to the formation of the Neo-Tethys Ocean. Then at the beginning of Triassic times, two short episodes of active rifting associated to the Siberian and Emeishan large igneous provinces (LIPs) failed. The true disintegration of Pangea resulted from (1) a Triassic passive rifting leading to the emplacement of the central Atlantic magmatic province (200 Ma) LIP and the subsequent opening of the central Atlantic Ocean during the lowermost Jurassic and from (2) a Lower Jurassic active rifting triggered by the Karoo-Ferrar LIP (183 Ma), which led to the opening of the West Indian Ocean. The same sequence of passive then active rifting is observed during the Lower Cretaceous with, in between, the Parana-Etendeka LIP at 135 Ma. We show that the relationships between the style of rifts and their breakdown or with the type of resulting margins (as magma poor or magma dominated) are not straightforward. Finally, we discuss the respective role of mantle global warming promoted by continental agglomeration and mantle plumes in the weakening of the continental lithosphere and their roles as rifting triggers.
