Paleoflora Cuaternaria de El Anís, norte de los Andes, Venezuela

Abstract

-QUATERNARY PALEOFLORA FROM EL ANIS, NORTHERN ANDES, VENEZUELA. This work deals with taxonomic and paleoecological aspects based on Quaternary fossil leaves from Venezuela. It is the fi rst of its kind and therefore represents a novelty. The paleofl ora of the El Anís area, Mérida, presents itself as impressions/compressions of fossil angiosperm leaves, this association being very diverse, abundant, and well preserved, what allowed taxonomic treatment. Twentynine taxa were identifi ed belonging to the following families: Aristolochiaceae, Asteraceae, Bignoniaceae, Boraginaceae, Cannabaceae, Campanulaceae, Clusiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Loranthaceae, Malvaceae, Melastomataceae, Meliaceae, Menispermaceae, Myrtaceae, Piperaceae, Polygalaceae, Portulacaceae, Sapindaceae and Verbenaceae. Using the nearestliving-relative method on the genera identifi ed in the paleofl ora suggests the presence of a mature ecological unit that marks the transition between humid forest and dry forest, related to a gallery forest, where herbaceous-shrub stratum and other arboreal with climbers can be found. This ecological unit, having developed during the Pleistocene-Holocene, is the fi rst evidence of these vegetal communities during that period in an intermountain valley in the northern Andes.Key words: paleofl ora, Cordillera de Mérida, humid forest, dry forest, gallery forest, Pleistocene-Holocene. RESUMO -O presente trabalho contempla aspectos taxonômicos e paleoecológicos com base em folhas fósseis do Quaternário da Venezuela, constituindo o primeiro de seu tipo, portanto uma novidade. A paleofl ora de El Anís, Mérida, se apresenta como impressões/contraimpressões de folhas fósseis de angiospermas, sendo uma associação muito diversa, abundante e bem preservada, o que permitiu seu tratamento taxonômico. Foram identifi cados 29 táxons pertencentes as seguintes famílias: Aristolochiaceae, Asteraceae, Bignoniaceae, Boraginaceae, Cannabaceae, Campanulaceae, Clusiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Loranthaceae, Malvaceae, Melastomataceae, Meliaceae, Menispermaceae, Myrtaceae, Piperaceae, Polygalaceae, Portulacaceae, Sapindaceae e Verbenaceae. Utilizando o método do parente atual mais próximo, para os gêneros identifi cados nesta paleofl ora, se infere a presença de uma unidade ecológica madura que representa a transição entre o bosque úmido e o bosque seco, relacionada a um bosque de galeria, onde se pode apreciar um estrato herbáceo-arbustivo e outro arbóreo com presença de trepadeiras. Esta unidade ecológica, a qual se desenvolveu durante o Pleistoceno-Holoceno, é a primeira evidência destas comunidades vegetais durante esse período em um vale entre montanhas nos Andes do Norte.Palavras-chave: paleofl ora, Cordilheira de Mérida, bosque úmido, bosque seco, bosque de galeria, Pleistoceno-Holoceno.
