Paleoenvironments and age of the Talampaya Formation: The Permo-Triassic boundary in northwestern Argentina

Abstract: The Talampaya Formation is the basal unit of the Ischigualasto-Villa Unión rift system and has been traditionally assigned to the Triassic based on stratigraphic relationships. A median U-Pb age of 252.38 (+0.09/-0.22) Ma was obtained from volcanic zircons collected from a tuff bed close to the top of this unit at the Bordo Atravesado locality in the Cuesta de Miranda area (La Rioja, Argentina). This radiometric age is very close to the accepted Permian-Triassic boundary indicating that, at least in this local… Show more

“…In the Cuyana Basin, the top of the basal Rio Mendoza Formation was dated to 243 ± 5 Ma (Ávila et al 2006), suggesting that sedimentation began in Early Triassic times. In the Bermejo Basin, the Talampaya Formation yielded a 252 ± 1 Ma age (Gulbranson et al 2015), so that sedimentation would have occurred across the Permo-Triassic boundary.…”

“…The deposition of the Talampaya Formation has been historically considered to occur during the Early Triassic. However, a recent radioisotopic date of a sample collected in the upper part of the Talampaya Formation yielded an age of 252.38 (+0.09/-0.22) Ma, indicating that the deposition of this unit and, therefore, the base of the Ischigualasto-Villa Unión Basin took part during the late Permian, or even before, and continued into the Early Triassic (Gulbranson et al, 2015) (Fig. 2).…”

“…These conditions are represented by the establishment of erg systems, one Cisuralian (Limarino and Spalletti, 1986;Spalletti et al, 2010;Gulbranson et al, 2010;Limarino et al, 2014) and the other very close to the Permian-Triassic boundary (ca. 252 Ma; Gulbranson et al, 2015). These two drastic environmental changes could be related to peaks of volcanic activity leading to rapid CO 2 and CH 4 outbursts to the atmosphere.…”
