Palatal presentation of scleroma

Abstract: A case with palatal presentation of scleroma is presented due to its rarity and unusual manifestations. The patient presented with only palatal symptoms. Nasal endoscopy revealed signs of all three stages of scleroma: catarrhal, granulomatous and sclerotic stages. Histopathology was vital in the diagnosis. The patient was treated by medical therapy, and palatal symptoms were relieved by uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.

“…In this study, we used Rifampicin as a drug of treatment; only 25% of the cases were cured histopathologically, and that coincides with Bhargava and Date 65 , who reported no response to Rifampicin 450 mg daily for four months. However, in clinical assessment follow up nasal obstruction decreased by 55% of cases, and nasal crustation decreased by 40% of cases another regimen of 6months of treatment was continued for those who experienced clinical improvement despite positive biopsy.…”

“…[5] Drugs of choice include quinolones, doxycycline or tetracycline and less frequently streptomycin and rifampicin. [12][13][14] Rifampicin provides good results in the treatment of rhinoscleroma, but requires effective monitoring of toxicity. [15] Because of high rate of relapses the long-term follow-up of the patient is necessary.…”
