“…Consequently, phytolith assemblages from tropical forests are easily distinguished from those produced by savannas (Alexandre et al, 1997;Barboni et al, 1999;Runge, 1999;Runge and Fimbel, 1999). Phytolith assemblages are well preserved in modern soils (e.g., Piperno and Becker, 1996;Alexandre et al, 1999;Kerns, 2001;Kerns et al, 2001;Bremond et al, 2004;Bremond et al, in press), fossil humic horizons (e.g., Fredlund and Tieszen, 1997;Delhon et al, 2003), loess (e.g., Fredlund and Tieszen, 1994;Piperno and Becker, 1996;Carter, 2000) and sediments (e.g., Alexandre et al, 1997;Fredlund and Tieszen, 1997;Barboni et al, 1999;Baker et al, 2000;Carter and Lian, 2000;Wallis, 2001;Carter, 2002;. The phytolith index D/P ratio (phytoliths characteristic of tropical ligneous dicotyledons over the sum of phytoliths characteristic of Poaceae) was proposed by Alexandre et al (1997) as a proxy of tree cover density, and has been calculated by several authors for tropical and non-tropical phytolith assemblages.…”

“…The second site, Sunday Creek (Dickson, 1972;Moar and Suggate, 1996), near Greymouth, indicates that the transition from late MIS 5 to early MIS 4 is a period of rapid change from a Nothofagus fusca type forest to grassland. This is similar to examples of the MIS 5a/MIS 4 transition from elsewhere in the country such as the Canterbury region of central South Island (Moar and Gage, 1973) and southern Wellington (Mildenhall, 1994(Mildenhall, , 1995, Wairarapa (Harper, 1989;McGlone, 1989;Carter andLian, 2000), central Tongariro (McGlone andTopping, 1983) and eastern Hawkes Bay (Okuda et al, 2002) regions of the North Island. In all these cases, environments dominated by Nothofagus fusca type forests underwent a transition to either grassland or grass/ shrubland.…”
