Palaearctic species of the genus Confluaria Ablasov (Cestoda, Hymenolepididae): a redescription and synonymy of C. capillaris (Rudolphi, 1810)

Abstract: The types of Confluaria capillaris (Rudolphi, 1810) from Podiceps auritus in (?) Germany and the types of C. capillaroides (Fuhrmann, 1906) from Podiceps dominicus in Brazil are redescribed. C. capillaroides is recognised as a junior synonym of C. capillaris (new synonymy). Data on specimens of the same species from P. cristatus and P. grisegena in Bulgaria are also presented. The previous records of the two nominal species are critically analysed in view of the present redescriptions. The host range of C. cap… Show more

“…This genus has been reported in P. ruficollis japonicus, P. nigricollis, Tachybaptus ruficollis, P. grisegena, P. cristatus and P. auritus in Asia and Europe (VASILEVA et al, 1999a, b;BARUŠ et al, 2000;VASILEVA et al, 2000VASILEVA et al, , 2001VASILEVA et al, , 2008HAUKISALMI, 2015;SITKO & HENEBERG, 2015). In South America, the genus Confluaria is only known to be from Northern Brazil, with P. dominicus serving as its host (VASILEVA et al, 1999a). Therefore, this is the first time that the Confluaria sp.…”

“…Ablasov, 1953 (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae) were collected from the small and large intestines of grebes; the latter location is unusual for these parasites, and it may be the result of parasite movements following death. Vasileva et al (1999a) indicate that the genus Confluaria is restricted to Podicipedidae, and that records in other avian families are erroneous. This genus has been reported in P. ruficollis japonicus, P. nigricollis, Tachybaptus ruficollis, P. grisegena, P. cristatus and P. auritus in Asia and Europe (VASILEVA et al, 1999a, b;BARUŠ et al, 2000;VASILEVA et al, 2000VASILEVA et al, , 2001VASILEVA et al, , 2008HAUKISALMI, 2015;SITKO & HENEBERG, 2015).…”

“…During a taxonomic revision of Confluaria Ablasov in Spasskaya, 1966(see Vasileva et al, 1999a, b, 2000, Baer's (1962) specimens from P. auritus in Iceland were re-examined. Vasileva et al (1999a) considered these cestodes as belonging to another, probably undescribed, species of Confluaria. Recently, new specimens were collected by one of us (KS) from the same host and locality.…”
