Evidences of the use of fire are almost omnipresent in archaeological sites. However, few are the cases in which fire is the main study object of researches. With this contradiction in mind, this paper presents part of the results of an archaeology of fire conducted amongst the Asurini of the Xingu River. The objective of the research was to document technical and symbolic aspects of fire use in the daily life of the Asurini, identifying and classifying types of combustion structure and the employment of fire in domestic activities. Temperature data collected in the field with an infrared thermometer was compared with analyses of FTIR spectroscopy conducted on hearth and oven sediments. Lastly, the research intended to demonstrate how the understanding of fire as material culture can amplify the possibilities of its investigation in the present, also serving as an interpretative source of fire in the archaeological record.

As populações indígenas nas Américas são constantemente atingidas por políticas econômicas predatórias que afetam negativamente os seus modos de vida e os seus territórios. O texto aborda este tema, a partir da pesquisa (etno)arqueológica colaborativa desenvolvida com o povo Asurini do Xingu, em uma área na Amazônia Oriental, entre os anos de 2010 e 2018. O objetivo é mostrar que este povo indígena tem se apropriado da pesquisa (etno)arqueológica, por um lado, como um meio de materializar e vivenciar as narrativas (históricas, autobiográficas, míticas) sobre a sua trajetória histórica e dinâmica cultural e, por outro, como um instrumento de resistência para garantir a manutenção do seu modo de vida e do seu território. Além disso, o texto também procura evidenciar que a realização de uma pesquisa (etno)arqueológica, considerando as narrativas indígenas nos possibilita apreender outras historicidades, contribuindo para a descolonização do pensamento ocidental a respeito das histórias indígenas na longa duração.
