Pairwise Versus Multiple Global Network Alignment

Abstract: Motivation: Network alignment (NA) can be pairwise (PNA) and multiple (MNA). PNA produces aligned node pairs between two networks. MNA produces aligned node clusters between more than two networks. Recently, the focus has shi ed from PNA to MNA, because MNA captures conserved regions between more networks than PNA (and MNA is thus considered to be more insightful), though at higher computational complexity. e issue is that, due to the different outputs of PNA and MNA, a PNA method is only compared to other PNA… Show more

“…A multiple network alignment (MNA) exists when the tool simultaneously creates alignments between three or more graphs. A comparison of PNA and MNA methods is given in the survey (Vijayan et al, 2020). Figure 6 visualizes the difference between multiple and pairwise alignments.
Figure 6.The left subfigure displays a pairwise network alignment.

“…Pairwise NA methods align exactly two networks, while multiple NA methods align more than two networks at once. Because multiple NA methods are more computationally complex than pairwise NA methods [21], and because they are also less accurate than current pairwise NA methods, [22], we focus on the problem of pairwise NA in this study.…”

“…First, NA can be pairwise (aligns two networks) or multiple (aligns three or more networks) [ 10 , 14 ]. We focus on pairwise NA because current multiple NA is more computationally complex [ 15 ] and generally less accurate [ 16 ] than existing pairwise NA. Second, NA can be local or global [ 11 , 14 ], like sequence alignment.…”
