Pairwise comparison based failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA)

Abstract: The proposed method supports the determination of severity (S), occurrence (O), and detection (D) indices of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). Previously evaluated and previously not studied risks are compared in pairwise comparison. The analysis of the resulted pairwise comparison matrix provides information about the consistency of the risk evaluations and allows the estimation of the indices of the previously not evaluated risks. The advantages of the method include: The pairwise co… Show more

“…The members of the FMEA team evaluate the risks in pairs based on a defined scale from 0-9, where 0 means equally critical and 9 means extremely critical. The scale was created from the fundamental scale of AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), which is a decision-making method [6]. This scale is based on the three evaluation factors, namely severity, occurrence and detection.…”

“…According to the three criteria, the risks are assessed by the pairwise comparison. The essence of the pairwise comparison can be grasped in the form of a prepared table, the output of which is the ranking of risks [6].…”

“…Measurements and statistics are needed to make decisions using this method. AHP has been widely applied in multi-objective, multi-criteria and multi-party decision making (Kulcsár et al, 2020). Decision making in improving fertilization performance is important to do so as to reduce the impact of risk.…”

“…It usually takes time to perform the FMEA well. In order to overcome the fact that FMEA is limited to normal expectations of occurring failures, some of the researches propose to combine FMEA with AFD (anticipatory failure determination) and/or AHP (analytical hierarchy processes) (Thurnes et al 2015;Mzougui and Felsoufi 2019;Kulcsár et al 2020). Additionally, some studies propose hybrid models, for example with fuzzy methods (Fuzzy Preference Programming, Fuzzy Cognitive Maps and others) as was proposed by (Baykasoglu and Gölcük 2017).…”
