Painless Subacute Thyroiditis in a Patient With Acute COVID-19 Infection: A Transient Event

Abstract: Coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Although several articles have described the non-respiratory effects of COVID-19 in the past two years, there are few reports of COVID-19 associated with thyroiditis. We present a case of a middle-aged female patient with positive COVID-19 PCR associated with acute pulmonary embolism and thyroiditis. Three months ago, her baseline thyroid profile was normal. “…The early cases of COVID-19-associated SAT generally reported suffering from severe neck discomfort. In contrast, the authors of observational studies of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units described uncommon cases of painless SAT with no local symptoms (30,59). Although we discovered heterogeneity among the inpatient cases, it proposed that insufficient lymphocytic infiltration within the thyroid gland due to COVID-19-associated lymphopenia results in the absence of tension of the thyroid capsule and, thus, painless presentations of thyroiditis (59).…”

“…Recently, cases of painless subacute thyroiditis have been reported in relation to COVID-19 infection ( 24 ). However, there have been no reports of painless subacute thyroiditis leading to thyroid storm, and if painless subacute thyroiditis was indeed the cause of the destructive thyroiditis in our case, this would make it the first such report.…”
