Pain Management After Surgery: A Brief Review

Abstract: Proper pain management, particularly postoperative pain management, is a major concern for clinicians as well as for patients undergoing surgery. Although many advances have been made in the field of pain management, particularly during the past decades, not all patients achieve complete relief from postoperative pain. In this paper, we have emphasized the importance of postoperative analgesia and discussed the new developments in this field.

“…(3). Although at the present time opioids are the basis for postoperative pain control, because of the known side effects of these drugs a lot of efforts aremade to reduce the need for opioid doses in relieving pain after operations by administering other drugs or practicing other methods (3)(4)(5)(6). The ultimate purpose is to find non-opioid drugs with reasonable costs, lesser side effects and longer durability.…”

“…Pain after lower abdominal surgeries is a common occurrence and unless effective analgesia is provided many patients will have moderate to severe pain [2] . It is important to understand that severe pain may not only be responsible for secondary complications like hemodynamic instability, atelectasis (due to restricted respiratory movements) but also it may be responsible for delayed recovery, prolonged hospital stay, late ambulation and increased morbidity [3] .…”

“…Gabapentin has an analgesic (5) and opioid-sparing effect (1, 4, 6) both at rest and with movement (7) in acute postoperative pain management (1, 8-13). Postoperative pain is not purely nociceptive and may have other (inflammatory and visceral) components (14); so using drugs that act on different analgesic mechanisms seems logical (15-18).…”
