Pain in persons with chronic venous leg ulcers: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Pain is a serious problem for patients with leg ulcers. Research mainly focuses on dressing‐related pain; however, chronic background pain may be just as devastating. Our main objective was to describe the prevalence and characteristics of wound‐related background pain in persons with chronic venous leg ulcers. We performed a systematic review to synthesise data from quantitative studies. Studies were eligible if they reported original baseline‐ or cross‐sectional data on background pain in chronic venous leg … Show more

“…However, this group showed a statistical difference in painkillers' use, normally observed in this clinical picture (29) . The results suggest that patients who received adjuvant LLLT benefited from the analgesic effects provided by the treatment and showed a higher number of healed lesions, in line with previous studies (29)(30)(31) .…”

“…The consequences of non-adherence to treatment recommendations include chronicity of VLUs, increased recurrence rate ( Finlayson et al, 2018 ), infection ( Bui et al, 2019 ) and secondary squamous cell carcinoma ( Reich-Schupke et al, 2015 ). Disease progression ( Meulendijks et al, 2020 ) and associated complications exacerbate wound pain ( Leren et al, 2020 ), increase wound exudate, and reduce patients’ mobility, which in turn contributes to disease progression ( Meulendijks et al, 2019 ), leads to premature disability ( Mallick et al, 2020 ), and inadvertently influences patients’ quality of life ( Barnsbee et al, 2019 ). Management of these complications require complex interventions and highlights the need for optimal care for this underestimated condition.…”

“…The present study focusses on ulcer‐related background pain defined as pain related to wounds experienced in everyday life (other than procedural/operative pain) (Leren et al, 2020). This type of pain is highly prevalent and reduces quality of life (Olsson et al, 2019).…”

“…This type of pain is highly prevalent and reduces quality of life (Olsson et al, 2019). A recently published systematic review and meta‐analysis reported that up to 80% of persons with chronic wounds experience mild to moderate pain (mean pain intensity of 4 out of 10, 95% CI 3.5, 4.5) between dressing changes (Leren et al, 2020).…”
