Pain in IBD Patients: Very Frequent and Frequently Insufficiently Taken into Account

Abstract: BackgroundPain is a common symptom related to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In addition to abdominal pain, pain can also be an extraintestinal manifestation of IBD. Pain treatment is challenging and a substantial part of IBD patients are treated with opioids. Therefore, a better knowledge on pain symptoms is crucial for a better therapeutic approach to this clinical problem.MethodsPatients of the Swiss IBD Cohort Study (SIBDCS) (n = 2152) received a questionnaire regarding pain intensity, pain localization… Show more

“…7 During disease flares, pain is present in 50%-70% of patients with IBD, and the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of these patients was reported to be significantly lower in patients suffering from pain than in those without pain. 6,7 As such, EIMs are a common problem and may significantly impact the quality of life of patients with IBD, requiring specific treatments depending on the affected organs. Therefore, successful management of EIMs is essential for improving the quality of life of patients with IBD.…”

“…Colonic hypersensitivity (CHS) is another feature exhibited by most patients with IBD and IBS (Lembo et al, ). Chronic abdominal pain reduces the quality of life of both IBD (Gracie et al, ; Zeitz et al, ) and IBS (Halpin & Ford, ; Nellesen, Yee, Chawla, Lewis, & Carson, ) patients. Current therapies aim to reduce inflammation in IBD and motility disturbance in IBS.…”
