Pain, depression and sleep disorders in patients with diabetic and nondiabetic carpal tunnel syndrome: a vicious cycle

Abstract: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition involving nerve entrapment that often leads to chronic neuropathic pain. We aimed to evaluate sleep quality and related parameters in diabetic and non-diabetic CTS patients. Method This study included a total of 366 patients with chronic CTS. These patients’ sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and depression using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The severity of neuropathic pain was evaluated using the Douleur Neuropathiq… Show more

“…Sleep quality was also subjectively measured by self‐reported questionnaires such as PSQI, and similar findings have been reported. Subjective poor sleep quality was correlated with poorer glycaemic control ( r = .14–.30, p < .05) (Keskin et al., ; Knutson et al., ; Kwan, ; Mahmood et al., ; Tanik et al., ; Tsai et al., ), although the relationship became nonsignificant after adjustment for confounders in two studies (Mahmood et al., ; Osonoi et al., ). People with poor sleep quality had poor glycaemic control ( p < .05) (Lecube et al., ; Nefs et al., ).…”

“…For instance, one study only recruited participants without neuropathy (Trento et al., ). In contrast, the other study only included those with painful neuropathy (Tanik et al., ). This variation did not make a clear and consistent impact on the findings regarding the relationship between sleep disturbance and glycaemic control.…”

“…de Azevedo et al [28] noted that CTS is significantly associated with depression. This association applied to diabetic and non-diabetic patients as reported by the study of Tanik et al [29].…”

“…[15] A study involving 124 CTS hands and using LANSS pain scale did not reveal a significant difference between electrophysiological severity and pain scale findings in neuropathic and non-neuropathic groups. [4] A total of 366 CTS patients with 122 Type 2 DM and 244 nondiabetic patients were studied by Tanik et al [16] To evaluate neuropathic pain in the patients, the Douleur Neuropathique 4 Questions (DN4) scaleand VAS was applied.…”
