Pain and Quality of Life

Abstract: This paper deals with the impact of pain on quality of life (QOL). Two major factors have contributed to the enhanced importance of QOL in recent years: the increasing frequency of pain and the resources devoted to its treatment, and the growing theoretical insight that pain affects the person as a whole. QOL is defined as the person's evaluation of his or her well-being and functioning in different life domains. It is a subjective, phenomenological, multidimensional, dynamic, evaluative, and yet quantifiable,… Show more

“…This requires identification of all modifiable biological and nonbiological factors involved. 84 Because neurological recovery and functional recovery do not always parallel each other in SCI 3 and pain cannot be considered to be synonymous with poor QOL, 66 it is imperative that tools for clinical assessment of functional recovery and QOL be designed specifically for the IPST population rather than be applicable to all neurological disorders in general, global disability, or traumatic SCI. The need to determine the beneficial effect of the treatment of IPSTs, however, requires clearly defined standardized measures of the severity of neurological deficits and also the knowledge of how each deficit is related to QOL.…”
