Pain and pressure pain thresholds in adolescents with chronic fatigue syndrome and healthy controls: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: ObjectivesAlthough pain is a significant symptom in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), pain is poorly understood in adolescents with CFS. The aim of this study was to explore pain distribution and prevalence, pain intensity and its functional interference in everyday life, as well as pressure pain thresholds (PPT) in adolescents with CFS and compare this with a control group of healthy adolescents (HC).MethodsThis is a case–control, cross-sectional study on pain including 120 adolescents with CFS and 39 HCs, aged… Show more

“…Previous MRI reports in CFS have suggested that regulatory brain regions themselves might be unaffected, but a collective dysregulation has been observed in two-way signaling and correlated functions [ 42 , 43 ]. We have reported that cognition [ 44 ], pain [ 45 ] and physical activity [ 46 ] are three domains of impaired function in adolescent CFS. These functional domains are likewise associated with the efficiency of right dAI connectivity and cognitive control in healthy participants [ 15 , 17 , 20 , 47 49 ].…”

“…In total, we identified 26 RCTs or observational studies that investigated treatment interventions in paediatric CFS/ME. However, 19 of these studies did not measure pain at any time point,24–43 and two studies measured pain at a single time point only 10 44. They were therefore excluded from this review.…”

“…However, the aetiology and pathophysiology of pain in this population is poorly understood and current treatment approaches do not target pain 10 11. This systematic review aimed to identify what interventions, if any, have been used to treat pain in children with CFS/ME, and to establish whether interventions used to treat paediatric CFS/ME change pain scores at follow-up.…”

“…The pain component and pathophysiology of CFS are still poorly understood . Previous studies indicate that inflammatory cytokines play an important role in neurogenic inflammation and subsequent generation of neuropathic pain in patients with CFS . Therefore, the hemostatic levels of pro‐ and anti‐inflammatory cytokines may play a pivotal role in evaluating and estimating the chronic pain state .…”
