In the changing Arctic Ocean, organic pollutants' transport and biogeochemical processes are strongly influenced by their particulate export on the broad continental shelf. To better evaluate the vertical particulate export of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), seawater samples were collected from the Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea, and Canada Basin with the first application of 210Po/210Pb disequilibrium during the summer of 2012. Dissolved PAHs (1.1–19 ng L−1, mean 5.2 ± 3.6 ng L−1) showed spatial distinctions, with high values on the Bering Shelf and low values in the Chukchi Sea, while particulate PAHs (1.0–12 ng L−1, mean 5.0 ± 3.5 ng L−1) showed high levels in the nutrient‐rich Bering Shelf Water layer. According to the 210Po/210Pb deficit on the Bering Shelf, the export fluxes of particulate PAHs ranged from 1,201 ± 276 to 3,650 ± 1,570 ng m−2 d−1, and their residence time ranged from 55 ± 23 to 133 ± 31 days. From the Bering Shelf to the Chukchi Sea, the decreased inventories of dissolved PAHs were positively related to their vertical particulate export fluxes (R2 = 0.62), suggesting the “Shelf Sink Effect” on PAHs.

The seasonal polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) variability was studied in the estuaries of the Partizanskaya River and the Tumen River, the largest transboundary river of the Sea of Japan. The PAH levels were generally low over the year; however, the PAH concentrations increased according to one of two seasonal trends, which were either an increase in PAHs during the cold period, influenced by heating, or a PAH enrichment during the wet period due to higher run-off inputs. The major PAH source was the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass, but a minor input of petrogenic PAHs in some seasons was observed. Higher PAH concentrations were observed in fresh and brackish water compared to the saline waters in the Tumen River estuary, while the PAH concentrations in both types of water were similar in the Partizanskaya River estuary, suggesting different pathways of PAH input into the estuaries. The annual riverine PAH mass flux amounted to 0.028 t/year and 2.5 t/year for the Partizanskaya River and the Tumen River, respectively. The riverine PAH contribution to the coastal water of the Sea of Japan depends on the river discharge rather than the PAH level in the river water.

A vertical pattern of fractionated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) was studied in the Japan Basin in the Sea of Japan. The highest PAH concentration was found in the mesopelagic realm, possibly resulting from deep convection and/or subduction of intermediate water and its biogeochemical setting in the western Japan Basin. Using 226Ra and 228Ra as tracers revealed the PAH load in the open sea from the coastal polluted water. Dissolved PAHs (DPAH, fraction < 0.5 µm) were significantly prevalent particulate PAHs (PPAH, fraction > 0.5 µm) at all depths, associated with a predominance of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) over particulate organic carbon (POC). Hydrophobicity was more important for higher-molecular-weight PAHs to be distributed between particles and the solution, while the high Koc of low-molecular-weight PAHs indicated that their partitioning was driven by other factors, such as adsorbing of soot particles. PPAH and DPAH profiles differed from the POC and DOC profiles; nevertheless, a positive moderate correlation was found for DPAH and DOC for depths below the epipelagic, suggesting the similarity of the mechanisms of input of dissolved organic matter and DPAH into the deep interior of the Sea of Japan. The PAH flux calculations showed that biological pumps and overturning circulation contribute almost equally to removing PAHs from the bathypelagic waters of the Japan Basin.
