Asia, especially China, shares a large proportion of global aquaculture production. Consequently, aquaculture food quality and safety with regard to contamination with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were assessed in eastern China, which is a typical area of aquaculture. The concentrations of ∑PAHs ranged from 42 to 600 ng/g dry weight in a variety of dietary species from farm ponds in eastern China. With regard to the total daily intake of PAHs estimated based on the literature data on urinary hydroxy‐PAHs in this region, there was a significant difference between children (mean = 130 ng/kg/d) and adults (mean = 600 ng/kg/d for pregnant women, 1700 ng/kg/d for women, and 2300 ng/kg/d for men). Furthermore, we provided a novel estimation on the fractional contribution of aquatic products to the overall human daily intake of PAHs. Specifically, the contribution of aquatic foodstuffs to total daily intake for children and pregnant women reached more than 50 and 10%, respectively, indicating that children and pregnant women were more vulnerable to the PAH‐contaminated aquaculture foodstuffs. Meanwhile, no significant region‐specific pattern between different provinces was observed. In summary, these results suggested that sensitive subpopulations were vulnerable to exposure to PAH‐contaminated aquatic products, and it is necessary to pay attention to the dietary intake pattern of these sensitive subgroups in eastern China. Further, fish samples of the black sea, Bulgaria [63], local feral fish in three Gorges River, China [64], and fishes obtained from Korean markets [65] were reported to contain a toxic amount of PCBs. Organic pollutants are continuously disrupting the equilibrium of nature. Polychlorinated Biphenyls are a member of the broad family of man-made organic chemicals well-known as chlorinated hydrocarbons. Due to their chemical stability, high boiling point and electrical insulating properties, non-flammability, Polychlorinated Biphenyls are used in various commercial as well as industrial applications. Polychlorinated Biphenyls residues remain in the ecosystem and bioaccumulate in various organisms due to their persistent nature and resistance against natural breakdown agents. This leads to the enlisting of approximately 209 chlorinated congeners in the list of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention. Their residues have been detected in various environmental components even though their production has been banned for more than a decade. High residues of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in water bodies, aquatic faunas, soils and sediments, air, and biota samples have been reported. Therefore, the current review aims at depicting the source and dynamics of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in the environment as well as the exploitation of various detection tools for the analysis of Polychlorinated Biphenyls. Besides, it provides a critical description of worldwide contamination scenarios of Polychlorinated Biphenyls and the need for further advancement in the detection and extensive identification.

The role of mussels in laboratory-scale constructed wetlands (CWs) where wastewater was contaminated with five typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (three 3ring PAHs and two 4-ring PAHs) was investigated in this study. The CWs performance and PAHs removal mechanisms were well studied. Results indicated that these five PAHs improved removal efficiencies of NO 3 -N but in the case of NH 4 -N accumulation occurred.Of the five added PAHs, the 4-ring PAHs were more refractory with higher concentrations in effluent than 3-ring PAHs. By monitoring the five PAHs concentration in water, mussels had excellent removal efficiency of the five PAHs (97%). According to the mass balance calculation, mussels promoted plant uptake of five PAHs, contributing 15.2% of five PAHs removal in CWs. The PAHs could also accumulate in mussels through ingested substrate. Thus, mussels presented a positive correlation with five PAHs purification at a depth of 0-10 cm in substrate, which was 34.7 μg/kg lower than the control group. Due to the purification and enhanced aerated degradation, mussels performed better in removing 3-ring PAHs in substrate, decreasing 8.3% for 3-ring PAHs compared to the control. A positive correlation between five PAHs addition and nirS, nrfA genes was observed. However, PAHs showed negative impact on nitrifying bacteria (amoA). The significant correlations between mussels and five PAHs made it possible to improve CWs for PAHs treatment with aquatic faunas.
