Paenibacillus sonchi sp. nov., a nitrogen-fixing species isolated from the rhizosphere of Sonchus oleraceus

Abstract: A nitrogen-fixing bacterium, designated strain X19-5 T , was isolated from rhizosphere soil of Sonchus oleraceus. Phylogenetic analysis based on a fragment of the nifH gene and the fulllength 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain X19-5 T was a member of the genus Paenibacillus. Strain X19-5 T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (98.8 %) with Paenibacillus graminis RSA19 T and below 97 % similarity with other recognized members of the genus. The level of DNA-DNA relatedness between strain… Show more

“…The major N 2 ‐fixing isolates (P26E and P27E) were grouped closest to the type species P. riograndensis , P. graminis and P. sonchi . These species share approximately 99% 16S rRNA gene sequence identity and are known N‐fixers (Berge et al , ; Hong et al , ; Beneduzi et al , ). The PGPR P. riograndensis SBR5 T was isolated from the wheat rhizosphere, also in Southern Brazil, and exhibited the ability to fix N and to produce siderophores and ICs (Beneduzi et al , ).…”

“…Nitrogen fixation has been described in several species of the genus Paenibacillus (3,4,7,8,9,10,11,12,14,16,17,18,19,20,22,23,24,25), and some of these bacteria are promising candidates for crop inoculation (21). In this work, we obtained the genome sequence of Paenibacillus riograndensis SBR5 T , which, in addition to nitrogen fixation, has shown several plant growth-promoting (PGP) capabilities (1,2).…”

“…The genus Paenibacillus is proposed for rRNA group 3 bacilli according to comparative 16S rRNA sequence analysis (Ash et al, 1993). Some reported paenibacilli have been isolated from the rhizosphere of a diverse plant species for instance: Paenibacillus brasilensis from maize (von der Weid et al, 2002), Paenibacillus filicis from the fern (Kim et al, 2009), Paenibacillus forsythiae from Forsythia mira (Ma and Chen, 2008), Paenibacillus naphthalenovorans from salt marsh plants (Daane et al, 2002), Paenibacillus rhizosphaerae from Cicer arietinum (Rivas et al, 2005), Paenibacillus riograndensis from Triticum aestivum (Beneduzi et al, 2009), Paenibacillus sonchi from Sonchus oleraceus (Hong et al, 2009), and Paenibacillus zanthoxyli from Zanthoxylum simulans (Ma et al, 2007).…”
