Paediatric Rehabilitation Ingredients Measure: a new tool for identifying paediatric neurorehabilitation content

Abstract: Identifying contribution of rehabilitation to outcomes after acquired brain injury requires quantification of rehabilitation 'dose' and 'content'. Previous approaches to 'parsing' of rehabilitation dose and content may have overemphasized one-to-one sessions with therapists. We present a novel, holistic tool for identification of ingredients of an interdisciplinary rehabilitation package. It supports interdisciplinary communication and has potential as a research tool.

“…In the UK there are ongoing discussions regarding a core outcome measure set to capture function in children with ABI, with work needed to develop measures of rehabilitation in this population. 15 The Experience of Service Questionnaire provides useful service user feedback through the scoring and free-text sections for audit purposes. Collecting service user feedback continues to be central to the person-centred care ethos of the service and ensuring children and families feel listened to and well supported, as detailed in the NHS Long Term Plan.…”

“…However, identification of the type of intervention provided for each individual child was not available through the measures used in the routine data collection in this study. New approaches to the capture of rehabilitation input, such as Paediatric Rehabilitation Ingredients Measure – PRISM (Forsyth et al., 2018), have potential to help evaluate child outcomes against intervention approaches in the future.…”

“…Furthermore, this service evaluation did not capture the full rehabilitation input of the wider team in the full recovery trajectory of the CYP that could have influenced self-care performance. New tools such as PRISM have the potential to address this gap in future research studies (Forsyth et al., 2018).…”

“…A clinically oriented research group from Newcastle, UK has developed a promising computer‐based tool (Paediatric Rehabilitation Ingredients Measure [PRISM]) which assists multi‐professional teams in identifying the primary targets of rehabilitation among patients with traumatic brain injury . PRISM helps to define the content of rehabilitation treatment delivered during the recovery phase after traumatic brain injury which meets the actual needs of the child.…”
