Molecular imaging research in atherosclerosis: A 23-year scientometric and visual analysis

Background: Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are major global health problems, and the main cause is atherosclerosis. Recently, molecular imaging has been widely employed in the diagnosis and therapeutic applications of a variety of diseases, including atherosclerosis. Substantive facts have announced that molecular imaging has broad prospects in the early diagnosis and targeted treatment of atherosclerosis.Objective: We conducted a scientometric analysis of the scientific publications over the past 23 years on molecular imaging research in atherosclerosis, so as to identify the key progress, hotspots, and emerging trends.Methods: Original research and reviews regarding molecular imaging in atherosclerosis were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Microsoft Excel 2021 was used to analyze the main findings. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and a scientometric online platform were used to perform visualization analysis of the co-citation of journals and references, co-occurrence of keywords, and collaboration between countries/regions, institutions, and authors.Results: A total of 1755 publications were finally included, which were published by 795 authors in 443 institutions from 59 countries/regions. The United States was the top country in terms of the number and centrality of publications in this domain, with 810 papers and a centrality of 0.38, and Harvard University published the largest number of articles (182). Fayad, ZA was the most productive author, with 73 papers, while LIBBY P had the most co-citations (493). CIRCULATION was the top co-cited journal with a frequency of 1,411, followed by ARTERIOSCL THROM VAS (1,128). The co-citation references analysis identified eight clusters with a well-structured network (Q = 0.6439) and highly convincing clustering (S = 0.8865). All the studies calculated by keyword co-occurrence were divided into five clusters: “nanoparticle,” “magnetic resonance imaging,” “inflammation,” “positron emission tomography,” and “ultrasonography”. Hot topics mainly focused on cardiovascular disease, contrast media, macrophage, vulnerable plaque, and microbubbles. Sodium fluoride ⁃PET, targeted drug delivery, OCT, photoacoustic imaging, ROS, and oxidative stress were identified as the potential trends.Conclusion: Molecular imaging research in atherosclerosis has attracted extensive attention in academia, while the challenges of clinical transformation faced in this field have been described in this review. The findings of the present research can inform funding agencies and researchers toward future directions.

BACKGROUND:The scientific trends and developments in the field of nanotoxicology were analyzed through a scientometric approach. This study aimed to describe and unravel the main topics on nanomaterials concerning their potential toxicity. It was generated four databases: two for global nanotoxicological papers (Ds1 and Ds2) and two with a Latin-American focus (LA1 and LA2). Ds2 and LA2 databases were constructed with studies dealing with the toxic effects of carbon nanomaterials. Scientometric analyses were performed using CiteSpace software. The following items were evaluated: frequencies, burst, centrality for co-citations of Web of Science categories, keywords, references, authors, and countries.RESULTS: Global analysis resulted in a total of 29 798 papers for Ds1 and 3835 for Ds2. Latin-American papers resulted in 1397 articles for LA1 and 148 for LA2. Scientometric analyses indicated a specialization of the topics covered over time, ranging from general categories (such as Chemistry) to more specialized ones (such as Genetics or Neurosciences). Nano-silver prevailed in the nanotoxicological studies and graphene dominated in the field of carbon nanomaterials. In the last 5 years, a prominent growth has been observed in the number of studies that focus on the potential impact of nanomaterials on the environment.CONCLUSION: The research efforts in nanotoxicology have been mainly concentrated on assays that use nano-silver; meanwhile, in carbon nanomaterials, the focus has been concentrated on toxicological tests with graphene. Overall, we stress the importance of nanotoxicology as a strategy to obtain scientific information that can aid in the environmental sustainability of nanotechnologies.

Background Atherosclerosis（AS）is a common chronic vascular inflammatory condition. Early detection and diagnosis are important for reducing residual risk.Biomarkers can reveal the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment characteristics. In recent years, a number of studies have been carried out to search for biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of AS, but there are still no such studies. This paper systematically reviews studies related to atherosclerosis biomarkers to provide guidance for further research. Objective We conducted a bibliometric analysis of the scientific publications in the last 10 years to identify the key progress, hotspots and emerging trends related to atherosclerosis biomarkers. Methods Original studies and reviews regarding to atherosclerosis biomarkers were retrieved from the Web of Science core collection(WoSCC) database. Microsoft Excel 2019,CiteSpace6.1,VOSviewer1.6.16 and bibliometrix were used to map the annual publication,major journals and performed visualization analysis of keyword co-occurrence,cluster,timeline and keyword burst. Results A total of 3,381 articles were finally included. The United States (26.09%) and China (18.87%),accounted for nearly half of the world’s publications. Johns Hopkins University, Harvard Medical School and the University of Washington were the most common publication institutions. Ballantyne christie M, Blaha michael J and Budoff matthew J had the most publications in this field. Articles in this area have been widely published in Atherosclerosis, PlOS One, Journal Of The American Heart Association.All the studies calculated by keyword co-occurrence were divided into four clusters: “atherosclerosis”, “risk”, “coronary heart disease”and“cardiovascular disease”. Hot topics mainly focused on “Pulse wave velocity”, “C-reactive protein”,“intimal media “Non-coding RNAs” ,“extracellular vesicles” and“neutrophil extracellular traps” were identified as the potential trends. Conclusions The research trend of atherosclerosis biomarkers is manifested in the gradual deepening of the research content and the development toward a more detailed level. However, there are still some problems, such as a lack of high-quality research and relatively simple methods.
