PACS for Bhutan: a cost effective open source architecture for emerging countries

Abstract: This paper reports the design and implementation of an innovative and cost-effective imaging management infrastructure suitable for radiology centres in emerging countries. It was implemented in the main referring hospital of Bhutan equipped with a CT, an MRI, digital radiology, and a suite of several ultrasound units. They lacked the necessary informatics infrastructure for image archiving and interpretation and needed a system for distribution of images to clinical wards. The solution developed for this proje… Show more

“…e cycle-consistency loss addresses this underconstrained problem. e full objective function by putting these loss terms together and by weighting the cycle-consistency loss with a hyper parameter λ is defined as equation (1). Pix2pix can rely heavily on L1 loss; therefore, adversarial loss may play a supplementary role and it may be better to subtract it.…”

“…Adoption of open source technologies such as open source PACS in medical imaging is an important development in imaging informatics [36]. From the users' perspective, open source PACS is more appealing mainly because it is free of cost [37], which is the most important issue for many PACS users, especially in resource-poor developing countries [38], small organisations [39], and research institutions [40]. However, our findings show that open source PACS has many limitations such as problems in the workflow (e.g.…”

“…However, online reviewing of the radiology images is inherently different comparing to day-to-day clinical practice of radiology. An essential part of part of an expert in radiology is the systematic style and consistency of scrolling through the images, which unfortunately we believe is an overlooked part of radiology training and education, which is immensely based on the digital technology for the next generation of medical imagers, the millennium generation radiologists (8). (9).…”
