TCP/IP is the backbone of modern network communication, connecting devices across the world. TCP/IP at its core is a suite of protocols that enables the transmission of data between computers, facilitating the foundation of the interconnected global network. At the Application Layer of TCP/IP is where the interaction between software applications and the network occurs. The user-centric protocols such as HTTP, SMTP, FTP, POP3, IMAP and DNS facilitate various tasks at this layer such as web browsing, email communication, and file transfer. This comprehensive survey conducted an exploration of the performance, security and privacy issues at the application layer of the TCP/IP. It initiated by providing a background of TCP/IP model, it’s architecture and the core characteristics, with major focus on the application layer. This paper aimed to discuss the state-of-the-art of performance, privacy and security concerns in TCP/IP application layer. It also proposed future research areas to equip researchers, practitioners, policy makers and the decision makers with tangible knowledge, offering guidance in navigating the performance, privacy and security concerns in TCP/IP Application Layer. It aimed to discuss the current performance, privacy and security research gaps at the Application Layer of the TCP/IP Model. The findings of this research sheds light on the performance, privacy and security issues while suggesting the countermeasures to strengthen and optimize the overall performance, security and privacy of TCP/IP model at the application layer. The paper finally suggests future directions and research areas at the TCP/IP application layer.

The size of the TCAM memory grows as more entries are added to the flow table of Open Flow switch. The procedure of looking up an IP address involves finding the longest prefix. In order to keep up with the link speed, the IP lookup operation in the forwarding table should also need to be speed up. TCAM's scalability and storage are constrained by its high power consumption and circuit density. The only time-or space-efficient algorithms for improvement are the subject of several research studies. In order to boost performance even further, this study focuses on time and space efficient algorithms. To strike a balance between speedy data access and efficient storage, this study proposes a combination of compression and a quick look-up mechanism to satisfy the space and speed requirements of the Open Flow switch. As the data is compressed, performance improves because less memory is required to store the look-up table and fewer bits are required to search. The look up complexity of proposed approach is O(log (log n/2)) and average space reduction is 61%.

PurposeCloud computing originated in central data centers that are connected to the backbone of the Internet. The network transport to and from a distant data center incurs long latencies that hinder modern low-latency applications. In order to flexibly support the computing demands of users, cloud computing is evolving toward a continuum of cloud computing resources that are distributed between the end users and a distant data center. The purpose of this review paper is to concisely summarize the state-of-the-art in the evolving cloud computing field and to outline research imperatives.Design/methodology/approachThe authors identify two main dimensions (or axes) of development of cloud computing: the trend toward flexibility of scaling computing resources, which the authors denote as Flex-Cloud, and the trend toward ubiquitous cloud computing, which the authors denote as Ubi-Cloud. Along these two axes of Flex-Cloud and Ubi-Cloud, the authors review the existing research and development and identify pressing open problems.FindingsThe authors find that extensive research and development efforts have addressed some Ubi-Cloud and Flex-Cloud challenges resulting in exciting advances to date. However, a wide array of research challenges remains open, thus providing a fertile field for future research and development.Originality/valueThis review paper is the first to define the concept of the Ubi-Flex-Cloud as the two-dimensional research and design space for cloud computing research and development. The Ubi-Flex-Cloud concept can serve as a foundation and reference framework for planning and positioning future cloud computing research and development efforts.
