Packet error rate analysis of OOK, DPIM, and PPM modulation schemes for ground-to-satellite laser uplink communications

Abstract: Performance of on-off keying (OOK), digital pulse interval modulation (DPIM), and pulse position modulation (PPM) schemes are researched for ground-to-satellite laser uplink communications. Packet error rates of these modulation systems are compared, with consideration of the combined effect of intensity fluctuation and beam wander. Based on the numerical results, performances of different modulation systems are discussed. Optimum divergence angle and transmitted beam radius of different modulation systems are… Show more

“…where F is the additional noise factor of photodetector, σT 2 is the thermal noise, σchaos 2 is the chaos noise. Based on the formulas above, we can get the final equations of BER for the eavesdropper [2], where γe is the decision threshold, For the authorized receiver, the synchronization loop replicates chaotic carrier similar with that generated at the emitter. According to Ref.…”

“…The symbol error rate (SER) is calculated by Equation 2, and the PER by Equation 3 using E RX , which is the received energy according to each modulation technique. Table 3 summarizes the error probability of the digital pulse modulation techniques [23,26,[29][30][31]34,35,37,[39][40][41]. The symbol error rate P se is optimum when the threshold factor k is 0.5.…”

“…In the L-DPIM, as shown in Fig. 3, a symbol is encoded with M bits of data M log 2 L. Each symbol is initiated with a pulse followed by k empty slots, 0 ≤ k ≤ L − 1 [18]. In order to avoid the situation that no slot exists between two adjacent pulses, a guard slot (guard band) is added immediately following the pulse.…”
