P4-enabled Smart NIC: Enabling Sliceable and Service-Driven Optical Data Centres

Abstract: This paper reports an FPGA-based P4-enabled Smart NIC solution which is designed and implemented for webscale cloud and to meet 5G/Beyond 5G networking requirements. The P4-enabled Smart NIC solution leverages the open standards, platforms and software-defined approaches, responds to the real time Data Centre Networking service requests, in particularly, enables the end-to-end network slicing, which is one of the critical requirements of multi-tenancy 5G network. We discussed the possibilities and challenges o… Show more

“…However, these empirical validations do not present any detailed evaluation about the queues or CPUs performance. In [30], Yan et al propose a SmartNIC-based implementation to enable network slicing for scalable cloud systems, with the objective of meeting 5G/B5G network requirements. This solution also employs P4 language to program the network data path for L2/L3/L4 classification and action.…”

“…This smart grid network slicing implementation uses a P4-NetFPGA card and present an empirical validation of the solution proposed. Yan et al [8] presents a SmartNIC-based solution to enable network slicing for web-scale cloud, with the objective of meeting 5G/Beyond network requirements. This solution uses the P4 language [9] to program the network data plane for L2/L3/L4 parsing and action, achieving very high performance.…”
