or with word-list delayed recall (p¼0.54) at follow-up or with a decline on these tests from 2000 to 2011 (word-list learning: p¼0.59; word-list delayed recall: p¼0.88). There were no significant interactions for HOMA-IR and gender, APOE-epsilon4 genotype or CRP levels on the cognitive tests. Fasting glucose, GHbA 1c or CRP levels at baseline were not associated with the cognitive tests. Conclusions: Our results from two nationwide Finnish population studies show that insulin resistance is associated with both poorer verbal fluency performance after 11 years of follow-up and a decline in verbal fluency during the follow-up period in a middle-aged population. Targeting interventions at individuals with insulin resistance in midlife could help reduce cognitive decline later in life.
