P16/INK4a AND KI-67 EVALUATION OF INTRAEPITHELIAL AND BENIGN CERVICAL LESIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL, IBADAN - A RETROSPECTIVE IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL STUDY

Abstract: ObjectiveP16INK4a and Ki-67 are adjuncts to current histological assessment of cervical biopsies in identifying cases that require strict follow up and prompt intervention. This study aimed to evaluate P16INK4a and Ki-67 expression in squamous intraepithelial and other benign cervical lesions. MethodsA retrospective cross-sectional study of 153 cases of cervical biopsies diagnosed as CIN and benign cervical lesions between 2006 and 2013 at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. “…Cases of cervical GIN being immunohistochemically stained with p16 are known and are due to high-risk HPVinduced transformation. 38 In this study, the case that was classified morphologically as chronic nonspecific cervicitis, but showed focal p16 immunoreactivity, had focal koilocytic change. In the case of the polyp, the reactivity was seen on the epithelial lining and was focal and limited to the lower one-third of stratified squamous epithelium.…”

“…37 Other studies showed high levels of p16 overexpression. 38 The low case in this study may not be unconnected to poor specimen handling and fixation technique, high level of p16 unreactive highgrade lesion, or methodology. It may also be that many of those cases were mimickers of cervical carcinoma like immature squamous metaplasia, and atrophic cervix cut tangentially.…”
