P-Adaptive Computation of the Scattering Parameters of 3-D Microwave Devices

Abstract: A new error indicator is proposed to guide the -adaptive finite-element analysis of three-dimensional microwave devices. The indicator makes use of the properties of the hierarchal elements to target directly the error in the scattering parameters of the device. The indicator is used to guide the -adaptive analysis of three rectangular waveguide components: a U-bend, a waveguide transformer, and a multiaperture-coupled iris filter. It is shown that the new indicator is able to provide more accurate values at a… Show more

“…The latter is introduced in the mathematical model by plugging it into (6), i.e., ∂φ inc (ρ)/∂n + j k 0 φ inc (ρ) = Ψ inc (ρ). The function Ψ, and specifically, Ψ inc will be part of an excitation term of the variational formulation (see (9)). Note Table 1.…”

“…However, quite a few papers have been published on p-adaptivity (and related topics), e.g., [8][9][10][11][12] and even fewer on hp-adaptivity, [13][14][15][16] most of the latter ones being h + p methods rather than hp methods.…”

“…The hierarchal elements lend themselves naturally to p-adaption (Nair & Webb, 2004). A suitable error indicator for the eth element is one based on the change in one of the scattering parameters, S pq , when the order of the element is increased by one.…”
