P‐24: Incorporation of Optiva Polarizers in LCD Production Line

Abstract: A new concept of a production line for fabrication of LC displays with Optiva polarizers is discussed. Depending on LCD design the polarizer may be formed at diverse stages of the LCD process. A common approach and basic features of incorporation of new polarizer in LCD mass production are considered. Prototype equipment was fabricated and sample TN LC displays were produced to demonstrate the viability of this new technology.

“…While drying, the layer crystallizes to a submicron-thick TCF functional layer with dichroic molecules aligned over the entire coated surface. A uniform wet coating of 5-15-µm thick [1][2][3]12 produces TCFs with a range of thicknesses from 100 to 1000 nm.…”

“…The strong anisotropy of the refraction and absorption indices [9][10][11] makes TCF attractive for applications in liquidcrystal-displays (LCDs) and organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). [1][2][3][4][5][6][12][13][14][15] The first industrial applications of TCF technology include plastic film polarizers, retarders, and color-correction films for the flat-panel-display (FPD) market. We discuss in this paper the optical and color characteristics of the first film products as well as their LCD applications.…”

“…The retardation characteristics of new colored (R001, Y18) and highly transparent (DSCG) TCFs are presented in the Table 1. The wide range of retardations available, the thin form factor and the ability to coat on a variety of substrates [14] gives a great degree of flexibility and advantages in many LCD applications, including LCoS projection, STN and TN displays. Thin multilayer retarder films can be made into reflective polarizers.…”

“…These films have high temperature and environmental stability (TCF is stable up to 250ºC) [11]. They have found industrial applications as nano-film polarizers [3,4,10,[12][13][14][15] and retarders [16,17] for passive LCD. This paper illustrates molecular crystal structure of TCF and supramolecular ordering in its LLC precursor.…”
