P‐153: Improved Flexoelectric Coefficient Measurement by Means of Transmission Ellipsometry

Abstract: Improved method in measuring the sum and difference of two flexoelectric coefficient e11 and e33 by means of transmission ellipsometry was devised. Planar alignment region and hybrid alignment region are fabricated in one cell of nematic liquid crystal, so as to be firstly determined the cell gap and then be estimated e11+e33. Accuracy was improved by measuring e11-e33 with using the same sample cell.

“…3. The peak of ∆ + when the applied voltage is around -3 V is higher than that when the applied voltage is around 2.5 V. From this result, it should be noted that there is a serious problem in our previous papers 9,10) . In this sample, impurities are less mixed in the LC from adhesive, so the heights of the two peaks are almost the same, and it implies that the estimation of ep either from the difference in the height of the peaks or from DC bias shift is inadequate.…”

“…∆ --∆ + ) to numerical simulations with supposed ep and physical parameters of subjected LC. Numerical analysis procedure based on the continuum theory for nematic LC considering surface anchoring energy have already been published in various publications, therefore details are omitted in this paper 3,9,10) . Figure 3 shows one of typical examples of numerical simulations, where LC-2 was subjected and supposed cell gap was 10 µm.…”
