Comparative study of griseofulvin and terbinafine therapy in the treatment of canine and feline dermatophytosis

Abstract: Skin physiology in cats has received little attention. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term influence of sex, time and the level of dietary fat and energy on the dynamics and qualities of the hair coat. Twenty-four European short-haired laboratory cats were followed over a 1-year period. They were divided into eight groups of three, according to: sex (12 males and 12 females), sexual status (intact or neutered) and diets [(high energy 4300 kcal/kg as fed, 21% fat) vs. (moderate energy 3500 kcal/… Show more

“…The occurrence of gastrointestinal adverse effects (GAE) such as anorexia, vomiting, or diarrhea, as well as the increase of hepatic enzymes, was described in canine sporotrichosis cases treated with azolic antifungal agents [6]. In dogs with dermatophytosis and malasseziasis treated with terbinafine (20-30 mg/ kg/day), the occurrence of GAE was low [57,58], and the increase of alanine aminotransferase was transient, with parameters back to normal 1 week after discharge [58].…”

“…Fifty seven studies involving either spontaneous ( n = 42) or experimental ( n = 15) M. canis infections in cats and dogs ( n = 2,027) were identified and of these, 30 described Wood's lamp findings . When data were pooled from studies describing the first examination of animals with spontaneous disease, 72% (378 of 523) of animals were Wood's lamp positive .…”

“…Given that this drug is not licensed for use in small animals, there are no published target animal safety studies for review. Published reports of its use either as treatment for dermatophytosis or pharmacokinetic studies were reviewed for mention of adverse effects . Because of the low number of dogs treated with terbinafine described in the literature, two studies involving the use of terbinafine for the treatment of Malassezia were included .…”
