Ozone production and trace gas correlations during the June 2000 MINATROC intensive measurement campaign at Mt. Cimone

Abstract: Abstract. An intensive measurement campaign was performed in June 2000 at the Mt. Cimone station (44 • 11' N-10 • 42' E, 2165 m asl, the highest mountain in the northern Italian Apennines) to study photochemical ozone production in the lower free troposphere. In general, average mixing ratios of important trace gases were not very high (121 ± 20 ppbv CO, 0.284 ± 0.220 ppbv NOx, 1.15 ± 0.8 ppbv NOy, 58 ± 9 ppbv O 3 ), which indicates a small contribution by local pollution. Those trace gas levels are representa… Show more

“…This pattern was also the case for most of the other species (figures not shown), and consistent with the diurnal variations of CO during the same studies . Such diurnal variation of air pollutants is opposite to those observed at other mountainous sites, which generally show higher daytime and lower nighttime levels driven by the mountain-valley breezes (Zaveri et al, 1995;Fischer et al, 1998Fischer et al, , 2003Zellweger et al, 2000;Carpenter et al, 2000). As a mountaintop site, WLG is also affected by mountain-valley breezes, with local anabatic and catabatic winds clearly observed during the observations Xue et al, 2011).…”

“…It is located south of the Po Basin and is a strategic platform to study chemical and physical characteristics of regional background conditions and air mass transport. The measurements of atmospheric compounds carried out at CMN can be considered representative of the South European and North Mediterranean free troposphere (Fischer et al, 2003). Nevertheless, due to enhanced vertical mixing and a mountain breeze wind regime, during the warm months an influence from the lowest layer of the troposphere cannot be ruled out (Marinoni et al, 2008;Cristofanelli et al, 2007).…”

“…These features indicate that the site was within the residual layer/free troposphere (e.g. Fischer et al, 2003). To separate the data the ozone values were multiplied by the mirrored relative humidity (100-RH).…”
