Ozone Measurements at Several Rural and Urban Sites in New York State

Abstract: Since the early 1970s, research to evaluate ozone levels in ambient air has been in progress at several rural and urban site in New York State. The sites were chosen to provide ozone data above and below the nocturnal inversion layer. Ozone from upwind sources has been shown to significantly affect both the urban and remote rural areas. Concentration isopleths show that ozone created in the urban plume of the larger urban areas significantly affects areas downwind under the plume. … Show more

“…Such transport has been proposed to explain occurrence of elevated oxidant/03 concentrations over large rural areas. According to other investigators, such as Coffey 11 and Dobbins et al, 12 the principal specific mechanism explaining such occurrence entails direct transport of oxidant/Os from oxidant/03-rich layers aloft to the surface. Vukovich is not in complete agreement with this mechanism and explanation.…”

“…Nevertheless, in order to give some idea of the spatial distribution of episodes, the following representations have been adopted: Sudbury for the northern areas, Ottawa and Cornwall for the eastern districts, and Orono, Stouffville and Scarborough for the central-southern regions. Since scavenging of ozone in urban centres, due to higher levels of nitric oxide in cities than in rural areas, has been noted in other studies [5], more attention has been focussed on six rural stations: Huron Park, Petrolia, Merlin, Simcoe, Orono and Stouffville. Surface and upper air synoptic weather maps as well as computed air trajectories were assembled and analyzed with a view to relating ozone episodes to meteorological conditions.…”

“…In the group of days with the characteristic of reported morning mixing height less than 400 m there was only one day where the offerin/acetylene ratio increased during the 0730-1000 period; the largest decrease ever observed was from 3.46 to 1.18. Several authors have reported significant ozone concentrations aloft (600-2500 m), especially above nocturnal temperature inversions [Siple et al, 1976;Wolff et al, 1977;Wolff and Wright, 1977;Coffey et al, 1978]. As the inversion dissipates, vertical mixing can transport any ozone aloft to the surface.…”
